Homecoming, chapter 1
I sighed as I watched a new group of people walk in. I hated it when people came to adopt someone, because either I knew I wasn't going to be adopted... or I didn't want to. I looked over at the couple, only one today, thank god. The lady was really pretty, and the guy looked kinda creepy, yet unique. He had blackish messed up hair, and had awesome shoes, yet he acted serious. Renae, the orphanage lady, started introducing some younger kids to the man, but the lady started wandering off on her own. I was seven and had long brown hair. I hated being like everyone else, I decided that if I had to fend for myself I needed to do it my own way. I walked over and sat on the nearby couch and brought my knees up to my chest and stared at my shoes. Then I felt someone sit next to me, and I looked over in shock, it was the lady.
"You look like you're having fun," she said sarcastically, with a smile.
"Yeah, I like watching my shoes, it amuses me," I said quietly, turning towards her and crossing my legs, acting like I was interested. I might get lucky enough that she would leave.
Instead she laughed, "That's cute, what's your name?"
Now I looked up at her, glaring. She was starting to get my hopes up, and that made me mad. I knew I wasn't that lucky. "Jill, yours," I demanded, not breaking eye contact.
"Adrienne," she said with a smile, now crossing her legs indian-style like mine and turning towards me. She seemed to really want to know about me. I loosened my glare and looked at her astonished, she hadn't left yet, hope was overpowering me, but I wasn't going to show it.
"Cool," I said, nodding, and then turned towards the guy she came in with. "Who's he?"
"That's my husband, Billie Joe," she said with a smile looking at him. He must have seen her, because he started walking our direction.
"He looks cool, well, a lot better than the nerdy freaks that have walked in here before," I told her, watching him come closer and closer our direction.
"Yeah, he's not too bad." Then she looked down at me, then back up at Billie. "You'll get used to him," she said. I looked up at her with my eyes wide, but she didn't look back, she just watched him as he came over and stood next to the couch. She was smiling real big, and this made me do the same.
"Billie, this is Jill," she said, still smiling.
"Hi," he said to me with a small smile. Me and Adrienne were still smiling, and there was a long pause. "You guys look... happy," he said, laughing a little and looking confused.
"Oh, sorry," I said, blushing, trying to stop smiling, but I couldn't help it. Now Adrienne looked down at me and saw that I was smiling for the first time since she had been talking to me. She jumped up and grabbed Billie's arm and dragged him to the window behind the couch to talk, about me, I assumed.
I stood up on the couch to watch them, it was too loud to hear what they were saying, but after a couple minutes they stopped and she walked over to me. I looked at her with my eyes wide, praying for the best. "You're coming with us," she said with an evil but funny grin on her face. I started laughing and closed my eyes. I wrapped my arms around her neck and rested my head on her shoulder as she carried me over to the main room. "Go get your stuff and meet us down here," she said. I ran upstairs to see my friend Kylie sitting on her bed, reading a book.
"Kylie, I'm getting adopted!" I said, my face glowing.
She stopped reading her book as I grabbed my bag and started to pack my bag. "By who?"
"Help me pack and you can come meet them. Adrienne and Billie Joe," I said, and she came over and grabbed some of my clothes and some stuffed animals. Soon we were running downstairs with my bag. I introduced Kylie to Adrienne and Billie and Adrienne promised me that we would see her again. Then Billie led me to the parking lot, and helped me into the car. It looked real expensive. Adrienne got into the passenger side and Billie got into the drivers.
"So, where do you want to go," he said with a smile, waiting for an answer. It seemed like for once something was up to me. Like I could've said Alaska and we'd be there in no time.
"Let's go home." I felt weird saying this, I never thought I would have a chance to.
