'Billie's Voice Will Make Your Heart Melt', chapter 1

It was the last period of the day and we had an assignment in class were one person had to answer a few questions about themselves and someone else had to try to answer the other questions. It was suppose to tell how much a little bit of information can tell about you. I was with a new girl, named Lori. She had been homeschooled all her life and she had started coming to our school a couple days ago. So I wrote down my favorite colors and my age and a few other stuff and we traded papers. Hers said: favorite color(s): Black, with purple or red or other dark type colors, favorite food: pizza!, what I like to do in my spare time: sit around and do nothin' I guess, age: 13.

Next, I had to answer one or two questions about her. So I put, favorite band(s): My Chemical Romance, maybe Nirvana, Panic! At the Disco, Green Day. Then what kind of area she lived in: small town type place (I didn't think that question made any sense). So we traded back.

"Well you pretty much got mine right, how'd I do?" I asked looking over my paper.

"You missed them all. Believe it or not, my entire family listens to country. I hate it so much, but no one listens to anything else. So I'm just....music less! And we live out in the country of course. You know, no towns or neighbors. I hate it," Lori answered back. I didn't really listen to much of it though. What I really caught was when she said she was 'music less'.

"Oh my god! That sucks!" Then the bell rang and we grabbed our stuff, "You have to come over to my house and listen to this band then. They're called Green Day," I said as we were walking out the door.

"Really? Awesome, that would be so great, are you sure that I"ll like them?"

"Absoloutely! Billie's voice will make your heart melt."

When we got to my house she called her mom and said she would have her sister pick her up when she went home. Then we went back to my bedroom and I grabbed the American Idiot cd.

"Ok, pick a number between one and thirteen," I said putting the cd in and turning on the stereo.

"Ok, ummm, two, my lucky number," she said sitting on my bed.

"Jesus of Suburbia it is." I turned it to two, and grabbed my guitar to play along with the song. I didn't actually play the song, so she could hear. But I knew the chords to it. We sat there a little while listening to the first part.

"Who are these guys again?" she asked.

I pointed up to my poster, "Green Day."

We sat there a little while longer, until the drums started inbetween Jesus of Suburbia and City of the Damned. "They're pretty good." She said simply. Then Billie started singing the words to City of the Damned and her eyes got big.

"Oh my god," she said quietly.

I looked over at her, "What?"

"Who is this?"

"Umm, Green Day, duh."

"No no, who's singing," she said pointing to the poster.

"Oh, him," I said, jabbing my finger at Billie's shoulder, "Billie Joe."

There was a long pause, I continued moving my fingers through the chords, then I looked back at her, and I saw a small tear go down her cheek.

"What the hell?" I yelled laughing a little, and sitting up.

She laughed to and pointed to the stereo. "His voice is so....so....awesome!" She wiped her face off.

"Oh, yep, what'd I tell ya. Billie's voice is amazing isn't it?"

"Yeah, I can't believe what I've been missing out on for the last thirteen years!" she said, she wasn't crying anymore, but I could tell she loved them.

"You know what I would do if I were you?" I said watching her.

"Invite everyone in my family to my house and then blow it up?" she asked.

"Exactly!" I answered back. We both just laughed. "Well, if you think this is good, listen to this song! It's one of my favorites on the album." I switched the song to Are We the Waiting. I had her listen to about half of it. "And if you like that, watch this!" I grabbed Bullet in a Bible and threw it in my DVD player and pushed play.

"Oh my God its a concert!"

"Yep, you can take it with you if you want. But you have to guard it with your life! Its the closest to a concert I've ever been, so no loosing it and no getting it taken away or nothing."

"Alright alright, thank you so much! You, like, saved my life!"

"No problem, you can come over some anytime. We can probably go to Best Buy or something and I can introduce you to some other bands!"

"You are so awesome!" Then she gave me a hug, and left.

This is a true story. It shows that music is the next 'must' in someones life (right under food, water, and shelter). Lori was a punk girl stuck in a country world. She hadn't listened to any actual good music for 13 years. She has recently bought a P Bass from The Hippie Hut in circleville though and she listens to Green Day almost everyday now. Atleast until she comes over again and she hears some My Chemical Romance or Nirvana. ;) No one can live a good life without good music.
