Fight for your Right, chapter 12
*Back to Mel's POV*
I called Aunt Lyndi's cell phone. I knew she wouldn't turn me in to mom, she wasn't like that.
"Hello? May?"
"Hey Aunt Lyndi. Sorry I haven't talked to you in awhile," I said grabbing a couple bags and walking across the street. The portable phone still worked over there hopefully.
"It's ok. I just got out of an argument with your mother..."
"Did you make her cry?" I said excitedly. Putting the bags down to go get my guitar or whatever else was left.
She just laughed. "Actually, I did. And I don't even feel bad."
"Oohh, what'd you do?" I asked sitting down on the porch step to my empty house. Well, Billie was in there. Tiffany was putting the last of my needed belongings on Billie's porch.
"Umm, well," she hesitated.
"You brought up dad didn't you," I replied, the excitement quickly faded.
"Yes, but she deserved it May. I can't stand what she's doing anymore then you can. Jimmy was my brother pretty much," she said defensively. It was true though, dad had been Lyndi's best friend. That's how he met mom.
"I know, I don't blame you. It just kinda makes me think about him a little..." I said trailing off. Now Billie was sitting next to me. He looked kind of depressed to. Mainly because my dad and his had been best friends. So we were pretty much like cousins.
"Yeah, I know. I'm a little surprised of how much you remember about him. You only knew him for three years," she said quietly.
My eyes filled with tears, "Well, when you loved someone that much and they disappear, you can't afford to forget anything," I muttered biting my lip so my friends didn't have to see me cry. It didn't work though and Tiff sat next to me and rested her head on my shoulder and Billie put his arm around me.
She didn't say anything, but I could tell that she was crying to. "Well, all we're doing is bringing back memories, so where are you staying?"
"Well, at the moment, I'm staying at Billie's." I put the phone on speaker-phone and held it out so all three of us could talk to her.
"Seriously? Isn't that like, right across the street?" she asked sniffling from our previous topic.
"Yeah, but I haven't gotten caught yet have I?" I said with a laugh.
She just laughed to. "Well, maybe once I get another job and you can come stay with me. Ollie doesn't care that you stay there does she?"
"Nah. She loves Mel," Billie said to the phone.
"Oh hey! Is that Billie?" Lyndi said with a laugh.
"Mayyyybe," Tiff said to the phone.
"Now I know that ones Tiffany," she said with a laugh.
"Hey you yelled at me yesterday! What was that for?" Tiff protested.
"You failing my class and making me look bad. Quit it."
"Well, I was just calling to say I'm still alive. I might not be at school for a while though. Well, maybe, I don't know, but if I go somewhere else, I promise I'll tell you."
She just sighed, "Alright, watch yourself May."
"I will, don't worry about me," I said with a small smile.
"Talk to ya later."
"Bye," I hung up and set the phone down on the porch and just sat there for a minute. Billie still had his arm around me and Tiff still had her head on my shoulder.
"Well, I better get home. Mom's gonna flip. I'll see ya around though, right Mel?" Tiff said standing up.
"Yeah, see ya."
It was just me and Billie, sitting there on the porch. I was still trying to sort this out. None of it seemed right. Some of my stuff was going to be in Billie's room while I crashed there, at Billie's house, right across the street, with Ollie and her five other kids. It made me feel bad, that I pretty much threw myself into her life and expected her to feed me and let me stay. I knew she would, but she shouldn't. Especially since something bad would probably happen, then Ollie and Billie would be involved.
To make everything worse, mom's car pulled into the driveway.
"What do we do?" Billie asked quietly.
"There's nothing we can do," I mumbled, standing up so his arm fell, but he was quick to follow.
"Melissa May you get over here right now," my mom ordered.
I didn't say anything, I just stood there as she marched over to me. He eyes were red from when she had been crying from Lyndi. I couldn't stand her, no way was I going back.
She marched over and looked down at me. I just glared up at her. "You insult my boyfriend, run off to only god knows where, then skip school."
"Yeah, I'd have to say, if you put it all together it was really kind of fun." Crap, I did it again. I have a really bad problem doing that, kind of like Two-Bit from The Outsiders.
Billie smirked, but mom smacked me across the face. It stung, really bad at first. I glared up at her, and grabbed my jacket and ran. I ran to the end of Washington street, then realized the bus station wasn't far away, and ran there. The ticket machine was empty, I put some money in and got a ticket to whatever the bus was going to, but then Billie showed up right behind me.
"Mel, wait, stop-"
I whirled around and punched him in the nose. Not thinking at all. He took a few steps back holding his nose. "Aww shit Melissa." I put my face in my hands and watched in horror. I can't believe I just punched my best friend in the face. My life is so messed up. I'm so messed up.
I ran on the bus and took the seat in the middle and sat there and cried. I wanted to wake up out of this horrible dream. Believe it or not, Billie was quick to sit down next to me. "Mel, listen-"
"Sorry," I said sniffling.
He stopped, "For what?"
"Punching you in the face like that!! Tell me I'm dreaming."
"You're wide-awake."
I sobbed some more, and his arm was quick to go around my shoulder again. "You could lie to me once in a while. Just to ease into the facts."
"It's ok, not to be mean or anything, but it didn't hurt....as bad as it sounded," he said messing with it a bit. That just made me feel worse.
"Listen, you know, you can stay with me. My mom doesn't care, I don't care, I mean, it might be weird being right across the street from your mom, but-"
"Billie, all my craps sitting on your porch, she's knows I'm staying at your place. I don't know what I'm gonna do," I groaned, falling over into the window.
He quickly pulled me over so I was falling onto him instead of the window so I was in his arms. "Go to your aunts. Me, Tiff and Mike will keep in touch, and we'll all go see her so we can sort it out. It'll be ok Mel, I promise."
I quickly shook my head. "Nothings getting me off this bus."
I felt him sigh, and he bent down and kissed me, soft on the lips. Then he got up and left.
