Dreamer, chapter 2

*** 3 years to the day later***

I am going to quit school today. It's just not giving me what I need. Mom doesn't know about my plan yet, and I wont tell her either, considering that today is the 3rd anniversary of my brother's death. Even if it wasn't though, I still probably wouldn't tell her. Since his death, we rarely speak to each other. I looked at myself in the mirror. I was wearing my khacki pants with a white button up shirt and a khacki sweater on top, brown leather shoes were on my feet, with my curly-thick hair still curly and thick. My hair was in ringlets, brown thick curly ringlets, that went past my shoulder. My brown eyes were still covered up by my black glasses, too. I decided that since today I was quitting school, and it's the third anniversary, I was going to wear one of my brother's shirts. It was weird, ever since Rion died, I started to like rock music. I guess someone had to carry on from where he left off. I normally ignore today, being the remembrance of so many memories. I stepped into his room and stopped. That was the first time in 3 years that I had stepped inside his room. I grabbed a black KISS shirt and raced back into my room so I could change into the shirt and some jeans.

I found my black and white converse and started to put them on, when my mom walked in. "You better-" she stopped when I turned around, her mouth just a little open.

"What?" I asked her. It was only then that I realized that this just happened to be Rion's favorite shirt. I looked down a little, wishing I had grabbed a different shirt.

"You better go, or you'll be late," my mom said, still shocked.
I nodded and said good bye, and walked out the front door.

As soon as I reached school, I walked straight into the office, demanding I see the principal. They asked me why, and I told them to quit school. They told me I could do that right here, so I did and left. It didn't hit me though until I was halfway down the street. I didn't want to go back home until 3 o'clock, so I just hung around the local 7-11. I met some guys, but none really special. At least not in the first group that I talked to. After they left, I noticed a small group standing by the slurpee machine. I walked over to where they were at.

"Hey guys, what's up?" I asked very casually, with my hands in my back pocket, leaning up against the machine. It was only two guys, and right off the bat, you could tell who was outgoing and who was shy.

"Nothin' hotstuff, you?" the one that I guessed was outgoing replied. I laughed a little and smiled.

"So, where you guys from?" I asked, trying to strike up a conversation.

"Nowhere, really, it doesn't really matter. But we're headed to California, you?" the outgoing guy asked me.

"Oh, I'm from here, so California, why?" I asked.

"Easy, we want to see the world," the guy said.

"Really? Me too!" I said.

"My name's Harlie, yours?" I asked.

"My name's Jimmy, and we call him Jesus," the guy who had been talking the most said.

"Nice to meet you Jimmy, Jesus," I said, shaking both of their hands.

We walked out of the 7-11, talking about how much stuff we had in common. Actually, I should say, Jimmy and I. Jesus didn't say a word. When me and Jimmy were alone, I asked him if anything was wrong with him. "Oh him? No, he just likes you. See, he gets really shy when he's around girls he likes," Jimmy said. I just smiled. The walk continued, and when we reached my street, I realized that it was about 3 pm, so I could go home. Just as I was about to say I had to go, Jimmy popped me a question.

"You know, I was thinking. Since you also wanted to see the world, why don't you come to California with us?" Jimmy asked, coming to a halt.

I was shocked. "I would love to, but I can't just go. I would have to tell my mother. My house is right up there. Will you wait while I ask?" I asked them. Jimmy nodded, and I ran to my house. I waltzed through the front door, to see my mom sitting on the couch.

"How was school today?" she asked.

"Good, I quit," I said.

She went insane. "You know what? I want you out of my house! Pack your bags and leave! And don't come back until you either have your degree or are back in school!" she finally told me.

Great, just what I was looking for.

"Okay!" I said and ran to my room. I packed up all my clothes and, since I had a feeling we would be walking, I packed a blanket and pillow. I was just about to walk out when I stopped. There was something I was forgetting. Then I remembered. I reached under my mattress so I could get my diary. I hadn't written in it since Rion's death. I was going to start a whole new chapter. I stuffed it into my suitcase and walked out of my house.

I walked fast down my steps to see Jimmy and Jesus standing at the bottom. "Okay, lets go!" I said with a smile.

"Well, we were going to start tomorrow, but I guess we can start today!" Jimmy said. We walked to, where I thought was his hotel, to this street, but then turned into an alley. Jimmy told me his reasons for sleeping in the alley, and I understood. Jimmy and Jesus grabbed their belongings, and Jimmy said to me, "Lets go!"

And that's how our trip to California started.
