J.A.R., chapter 13

Shock was the only readable sign that could be found on Mike's face. Could he have really found what he was looking for? Ollie had moved a bit closer to Mike, speaking her mind, telling him how proud she was that he finally found her. Ollie left to go phone close friends. Mike stared down at the paper, almost regretfully.

The number seemed to be so offending, almost impossible to look at. He stared at the phone and the number, over and over again, at least ten times. The teenager's breath hitched in his throat, Could he really do this? Was it possible that he could pick up the phone and hear her voice... his mom's voice?

Mike reached over and snatched the phone from it's cradle, he felt panic rising from his chest. Not right now! You can't have a panic attack at this very moment! He loosened his hand, letting the phone drop to the floor as Mike closed his eyes, doing heavy breathing exercises. He didn't want to get Ollie because he was finally getting the attack under control. He reached back to get the phone, feeling no more panic or stress.

After dialing the numbers the impatient teen brought the device to his ear. It rang once, twice, and three times was the charm, "Hello?" Mike's eyes widened, was it really her? "Hello? Is anyone there?" He shook it off, "Um- hi, this is Mike, oh well Michael, well that's probably what they told you, um I--"

There was a slight gasp, "Michael? As in my son Michael?"

Mike sheepishly answered, 'Uh, yeah... that one." It was silent on the other end for about thirty seconds.

"Michael... how would you like to meet, ya know... together?"

Mike's heart stopped, "Uh, I have to ask Ollie or Jason, sure, I guess."

Kathy sighed, "Good, well could you put Ollie on, please?" The troubled teen seemed dumbstruck.

"Huh--Wha? Oh! Ollie... right, hold on," Cupping his hand to the phone Mike called out to Ollie, saying that 'Kathy' was on the phone. You could hear her hustle up the stairs, giving Mike a hard look. She gently took the phone from him, not believing that he actually was able to call his mother.

"Hello, who is this?"

Ollie was in for a shock, finding out it was Mike's real mother on the phone. She straightened out details so that they could all meet up at a park of some sort. Smiling, Ollie ended the conversation, "Oh, it was a pleasure to speak with you... Yes, we'll meet up soon...okay take care, bye." Ollie hung up and looked at Mike, slapping her knees as she got up, "Call Jason and tell him the news, I'm still on the phone with Allen, he's at work." Mike nodded and Ollie left.

Again, he stared at the phone, not another near death experience! he thought. Sighing, he grabbed the phone off the bed, weighing his pros and cons. He either calls Jason, not gonna end well or he doesn't and say he did... great option. Mike made a sour face as he dialed the memorized number, waiting for the phone to ring. "Hello?" What was up with everyone saying 'Hello?' couldn't they just say hi or how ya doin'?

"Uh, hey... it's Mike."

Jason laughed, "I would have figured as much, what's up kiddo?"

Mike laughed nervously, "No, I just got off the phone with some one... kinda special."

Jason gasped, "You got a girlfriend? Whats her name? How old is she? Where does she live? Is she nice, 'cause if she isn't I'll--" Mike cut him off.

"Dude, I didn't get a girlfriend, I kinda just found my mom, she sent a letter... saying that you got in touch with her and stuff."

Mike thought Jason must have hung up the phone at that point, "Uh, are you there?"

Jason coughed, "Yeah, I'm here.... never left in fact." The sarcasm and bitter humor couldn't fool Mike.

"Ollie set up a little 'date' so I could meet her, she'll be there.. maybe you and Billie too." The elder of the two scoffed.

"You want her to meet all of us at one time? That'll just frighten the woman... you know better than that."

Making another sour face Mike muttered, "Well sorry, I just don't want to be alone... well except for Ollie..."

After the two exchanged some not so kind words Mike hung up the phone, in the middle of yet another Jason lecture. What the hell am I gonna do now? Mike thought. He was screwed and Jason wasn't helping, why does life suck so much?
