Liberals smoke lettuce too (written by my best friend Ryan), chapter 2

"Mom! MOM!!!!" tears came streaming down my face along wit my mascara. I must have been really loud because Steven was now holding me and students and teachers were staring. I refused to hang p and I shrunk to the floor with Stevens's arms still around me.
"Miss Rodriguez, what's wrong with you?" An office lady asked.
"Something's wrong with my mom. I think she was in an accident!" thoughts were racing through my head so quick, I felt like I had to throw up.
"What are you talking about is Miss Rodriguez? *phone rings* *sighs* Hold on, please keep her calm Mr. McNeil." the office lady said. She walked over to her phone and started talking. I closed my eyes and felt Steven's strong arms wrap consume me.
She's right, I need to calm down, maybe she just lost signal. Maybe she ran out of minutes, maybe....

"She's on her way to the hospital," the office lady said calmly after a while talking on the phone.
"WHAT!" Steven asked; he along with everyone else there still gaping in my direction was very confused.
"Your mom, Marlena, she's on her was to the hospital. Well, I don't know her condition, but...the ambulance just picked her up from the wreck. I think it was bad, well, I don't really know, I didn't see it. It, umm.... It sounded bad, umm...."
"ALRIGHT, alright, I get it!" I wasn't crying anymore and my sick, worried feeling was gone. The only feeling I have now is annoyance for that stupid office lady.

"Sorry ma'am," Steven apologized for me and I found it annoying.
"If you don't mind I'm going to take her to the hospital."
"NO, I mean, I can't is anymore days of school. Besides, people in homecoming are having a meeting today remember?" I got off of the floor and quickly wiped away my tears.
"Are you sure babe?" Steven had a look of concern on his face.
"Yeah, I'll be fine," I put on a fake smile and took his arm.
"Alright but if you wanna go just say the-"
"No!" I sort of shouted at him. Then I calmed down more.
"No, come on now I've got to get to class."

I him out the office door and up to the school level of our school. I was just about walk into my first period class when he grabbed my arm.
"Baby, maybe you should fix your make-up first. It's all over you," he smiled sweetly and turned me into the direction of the girls' bathroom.
"Oh yeah, good idea," I smiled back. I had totally forgotten about my make-up.

"Thanks, I'll just see you at lunch then ok?"

I blew him a kiss as I turned into the door. I walked over to the mirror and looked at my reflection with disgust. I looked hideous, my once shiny smooth hair was now lank and my face was pale. My mascara was smudged all over my face; I took some water and wiped my make-up away. I dug around I'm my purse and reapplied my make-up. I then got some volumizer and put it into my nasty looking hair. It returned to its natural ringlet curls almost immediately (I know what your thinking, and after all that time I spent on straightening right? Oh well.) I puffed it up and walked out of the restroom and into my class. Thankfully, no one in my 1st period class had been in the office that morning but by my 3rd period class the word had definitely gotten around. Everyone was staring at me and whispering. I was mad at myself for making a scene but I just acted like I couldn't hear anyone. Lunch couldn't come soon enough. I rushed out of the building to meet Steven.

"People have been talking," I whispered as he hugged me.
"I know isn't it wonderful?" He smiled.
"What? No! How is it wonderful? Everyone's been staring at me!" I was shocked to hear he approved of this behavior.
"I know its great publicity for us both! I mean, everyone is gonna be talking about you crying and how I was there to help calm you down, it's just the drama we needed before homecoming!" He laughed happily.

"Well, I'm so glad you're happy," I said sarcastically.

"Marlena, baby, come on. Don't be like this," I started to turn away but he grabbed my hand.
"Come on, we should be playing this up," He whispered.
"Honey, do me a favor and leave the playmaking on the ice," I whispered back.

"I'm gonna take you to see your mom now," He said loudly so people could 'overhear'.
"No I'm not going," I whispered, why was he doing this?
"Yeah I'm sure she'll want you to come too," He said loudly again to make it seem as if I was oh so depressed about my mom.

"Stop Steven. I don't want to go. Besides we have a meeting," I said trying to get through to him.
"Oh baby, don't cry," He continued.

He hugged me close to him and hid my face so no one could see that I wasn't really crying. He led me towards his truck and I tried to pull away.

"That's it hun, let all your anger out. Just remember that I'm here for you," He said the last part more loudly than before.
He placed me in the passenger's seat and quickly ran to the driver's side and cranked it up.
"Don't worry we'll be there in a minute!" He yelled over his roaring truck. We sped off and I saw my school shrinking further and further behind me.

"Why did you do that?" I asked him as I stared blankly in front of me.
"Don't worry it's just for publicity. You know, for homecoming," He looked at me and smiled. He could tell I wasn't happy. He gently turned my head.
"Hey babe, smile, I did it for us," I put a fake but convincing smile on and turned my head back to the front.
"Then I guess I should say thank you," I said like I was happy, I even put in one of my famous giggles.
"There she is, that's the Lena I know," He smiled.

"Remember hun, its publicity that got you the crown in the first place. Remember? You had made the squad; you did that fundraiser for stupid orphans, and ran that blood drive. Don't forget what coach told me, if you can't win, you can't make anything of yourself, and...Come on, you know the rest," He urged me.
"And if you don't make anything of yourself, you won't be remembered, and where's the glory in not being remembered?" I smiled blankly.

I can't believe he actually thought I did all of that stuff for publicity. All of a sudden the thought of leaving Steven flashed through my head.

"Babe, you okay?" Steven asked me 'sweetly'.
"Like you really care," I accidentally blurted out.
"What's up with you today?" Steven asked as if he were astonished.
"What's your problem?"
"My problem is you," I couldn't believe I was talking like this either.
"I can tell you're upset about your mom, so I'm gonna pretend I didn't hear that," he snapped back.
"Pretend all you want," I mumbled. I still couldn't believe I was saying this stuff.

I saw anger boil up in Steven. Suddenly I felt a hot sting come across my face and I turned and looked at Steven. He had slapped me...again.
