Zoe, Her Father, and The Guys, chapter 9
I sat down next to Pete and Zac as Andy and Aaron sat on the other side of the table.
"Who wants a smoothie? You need fuel to do homework. I should know, I didn't finish, but I went. And where is Joey?" Billie asked, getting the milk, ice cream, and fruit out.
"Joey is in detention again. He skipped three periods today," Pete answered, not looking away from his math homework.
I only had science, and I didn't understand it very well.
"Damn, Adie is going to kill me and Joey. She says I don't have a good influence on my kids," Billie said, scooping half the ice cream into the blender.
"That isn't true, Billie, you influenced me before my mom was arrested. You influenced me to chase my dreams. And now, I can play bass, drums, and guitar," I said, looking at him pour milk into the blender.
"Thanks Zo," he said, capping the milk.
"Hey Billie, were you any good at science?" I asked curiously.
"No. That is why I dropped out. I don't think Joey knows about that, so don't say anything. I don't want him to drop out because he needs to go to college to survive in this world anymore," the short, black haired rocker answered.
"Okay. Thanks anyway," I replied, glancing back down at my homework.
"What you working on?" he questioned, pouring glasses of smoothies.
"Photosynthesis," I replied.
"Never mind. I remember that. I failed that test. I remember getting it signed by my step-dad. I got a nice ass kicking that night. I had two black eyes and a broken rib. Then the ever so painful bruised pelvis," Billie smiled, remembering his bad childhood.
He served the drinks and then he went outside.
As soon as I heard the door close, I ran after him.
"You said you wouldn't leave," I said, closing the door behind me.
"Your friends are right there with you, and I was just going to smoke a cigarette," he replied, confused at my action.
"Billie, I have a really bad feeling right now. I need Tre or Mike or you, and please don't smoke that? My step-dad smoked. Now I have really bad breathing problems. Please, I don't want to remember that?" I said, almost starting to cry.
"Hey, no one is going to hurt you. And I won't smoke it, I promise. I'll quit. Now, let's go back inside," he returned, opening the door.
I sat back down in between Pete and Zac. I felt a little safer already.
"Zoe, you okay? You scared us when you leapt up and ran after Billie Joe," Zac asked, concerned about me.
"Yeah, I just have a bad feeling right now," I replied, going back to my homework.
"Could it be that you haven't eaten? You said you didn't eat breakfast, and you missed lunch. You need to eat," Zac asked.
"Zoe you haven't eaten? You didn't eat yesterday either," Billie butted in, sounding very worried and concerned.
"You aren't starving yourself are you?" Pete asked.
"Please stop questioning me, I just don't eat. I was never fed at the orphanage so I have adapted to the lifestyle where I didn't eat for two days. Okay?" I explained again.
"Anyways, I did eat yesterday. I had a piece of pizza at the mall with you guys," I continued.
"Okay, just please eat soon," Billie said, pulling out a Red Bull from the fridge.
I finished my homework, finally. Aaron had finished his, and so had Zac and Andy. Pete took a little longer. He finally finished and we put all our bags on the couch in the living room.
"Anyone want to go to the mall?" I asked.
"Sure. But you have to ride on my pegs to and from," Zac bribed.
"Sure," I shrugged.
"Billie, me and the guys are going to the mall. I'll be home before 11. Bye," I bellowed into the huge house.
"OKAY," he hollered in return.
I hopped onto Zac's pegs, and we headed for the mall.
We reached the mall and headed for Hot Topic. I still had the credit card Tre had given me. He said it was for emergencies and such. I thought it wouldn't hurt to buy a shirt or two.
Aaron bought a patch, belt buckle, and a pair of cons.
Zac bought an AFI shirt.
Pete bought a HIM shirt and a patch.
Andy bought a poster of Hawthorne Heights, a patch, a sticker, and a shirt that had AFI on it.
And I bought two shirts. One of Hawthorne Heights and one of Linkin Park. Then I bought a sticker.
Next we headed to Flamingos.
I looked at the necklaces, and I picked out one that had flowers on it. It was all black, but it did have flowers. I then looked at the shirts. They were all girl shirts. They were all pink and light blue and purple.
"Hey, I like the necklace. Let me see," Aaron said, extending his hand.
I placed it in his hand, and he looked at it closely.
"Can I hang onto this? Just for a sec," he asked, clenching the choker in his hand.
"Yeah, just give it back so I can buy it," I answered, turning to look at the blank boards, just for the hell of it.
