I don't understand it.
Why is it that when a natural disaster occurs that doesn't involve any Westerners, no-one is ever interested?
When Typhoon Durian hit the Phillipines recently and killed over 300 people, there was very little news coverage of it.
The same was true for the Pakistani earthquake (2005) that killed over 19,000 but was forgotten 2 days later; yet the Boxing Day tsunami was front page news for weeks even though far less people died. And why? Because there were Westerners involved.
Unless it's something close enough to home to scare people, they just don't care.
Take these fires in California, for instance. They've been constantly on the news with updates and detailed reports - but very few people have been injured or killed. The last time I checked, there were 8 casualties.
But apparently those 8 people were more important than the 300 people killed in mudslides in the Phillipines.
That doesn't seem right to me.
Just because they're American doesn't make them superior to everyone else. Just because they're rich shouldn't mean they deserve more sympathy.
I think this is completely unfair.

Um. Over 200,000 people were killed in the Boxing Day tsunami.
