DARE doesn't do shit. They teach it to younger grades because they want to get it in kids heads early on that drugs are bad, so they just are preaching to a bunch of kids who aren't listening and will forget it all in a year.
took teh words right outta my mouth

The effectiveness of the program is dependant on the individual that goes through the class. Personally for me it just made me want to try some of it firsthand. But I can't say how the program works for all the others who have taken the classes because it is different for everyone.

i think that if you pay to much atenttion to somthing and make a BIG fuss about it being wrong and stupid people will try it more, because lets be fair all of us at one stage want to go against the wishes of our elders.

it does the oppisite, a bunch of people nerds would call square trying to tell you what is and isn't cool....what the hell is that?

It's not the cool kids saying, "smoking is good", as much as it is the uncool saying, "smaking is uncool"

There's actually a study, and I'll ask my mom later where she found it, that says D.A.R.E. actually doesn't do a damn thing to prevent drug useage.

My sister took DARE the other year (I took it ages ago and now hate it for personal reason) and didn't agree with the class at all. And when it came time to write their paper about their opinions on DARE, she quoted the article I mentioned above.

I think it should appeal to a younger audience, not target who it attempts to. Its a fluffy little bublegum plan and Im sorry, but pot isnt that bad, tons of kids are going to do it, get over it. If they wantto prevent drug abuse for heavier things, by all means try, but they need to be alot more hard hitting instead of exposing kids to more drugs.

Drug Abuse Resistance Education.

Do you think it helps kids from doing drugs?

Personally I have to say that when I went through the D.A.R.E program a few years ago I got a little more interested in drugs.

That's just like when I went through a religious school I believed before I wen't but not after. Opposite effect, ya know?

We actually came up with other abbreviations for DARE during DARE class.

One of them was Drugs Are Really Excellent.

I don't. Personally I have to say that when I went through the D.A.R.E program a few years ago I got a little more interested in drugs. I've never tried drugs and I never will, but it kind of makes you think "Wow. Just something like that can make you THAT happy?" I think that they shouldn't tell you the "good" things that drugs do to you and just the bad and eventually as generations by generations go into school and go through the program they won't know what the "good" things the drugs do to you are.

It is my understanding that DARE was founded by a raving lunatic who thought cigarrette smokers should be disembowled...

I think all drugs should be legalized (obviously I, as a libertarian socialist, do), but drug abuse resistance education should be pumped up and more present, but not in a forceful manner, as that will just cause people to be more rebellious against this overbearing authority and go out and do the drugs.

I don't think it works for everyone, some kids maybe, but it's a good thing they're trying to do, in my humble opinion, whether it works or not.

But won't that just shelter the next generation? You have to give someone all the facts, and let them make their own minds up.

If you were doing the same thing with alcohol, and educating people about that, would you just say to them "Well alcohol damages your liver?"

You wouldn't say that a glass of red wine every day is good for your heart?

You can't pick and choose what to tell people, they have the right to know.

Besides some drugs have good purposes, cannabis is often used as a painkiller for people with multiple sclerosis. They'll still be prescribed them in the future so how can you hide the fact that some drugs do have good effects apart from making you trip out?

Why is that obvious?

in my school, they make us waste 10 days of advisory (study hall, essentially) for DARE. its dumb, cuz they do it every year. honestly, do it one year, leave us alone for the rest of our lives, we get the picture

When I took DARE last year, (grade 5/6 split class) the officer taught us how to say No and turn down drugs when they are offered to you. I thought it was probably a good thing to know. They also brought in this guy that was in jail from doing drugs and showed us how messed up his life was...
