"All Grown-Up", chapter 3

"See you soon Dad!" Mary-Alice yelled from the balcony as he drove away. Her father had just dropped her off at her new apartment. She took a deep breath and entered her new home.

Her apartment was not big but not that tiny in size. It was just an average apartment nothing fancy. She took a look around her surroundings. The walls in the living room were painted a light pastel lime green. There was a beige leather couch and boxes piled up on top of each other, all of them placed in the living room creating a sea of cardboard. There was also a television and stereo all hooked up and ready to be used. Mary-Alice smiled and thought it was perfect. Wonder if the kids at highschool know that I'm missing, she asked her self this question but shook it away. Time to move on. She sat on the couch for an hour or two then flipped through the channels on her television. Then she felt bored and antsy and got up to explore her apartment.

There was a little kitchen which was connected to living room by the dining area. the tiny kitchen was already equipped for usage and ready to begin cooking. "Guess I'll have to learn how to cook." She sighed to herself. Hopefully the apartment wouldn't catch on fire while she was cooking Maccarroni n' Cheese. She got out of the kitchen and went to go see what else the apartment ahd in store. She that there were two bathrooms and two bedrooms on the other side of the apartment. Mary-Alice then stepped into her room and plopped down on her bed. there was a oak nightstand right beside her and a desk in the furthest corner. It had a computer set up along with books and paper. She stared at the mellow gold walls and then at the cieling. No glow-in-the-dark stars.

Mary-Alice then got up and her eyes stared at a glass sliding door covered by white thin curtains. "There must be a balcony!" she exclaimed. She walked over and flung the door open. It was a most wonderous view. She could see the whole town from her home. Noises of cars filled the streets. Chattering coming from other balconies mixed in with the barking of dogs. Stereos blasting music on full volume. A cool breeze whipped her hair in her face as it brought the scents of gardenias into her breath. She looked at the sky and saw so many shades of pinks, blues, purples, and oranges. The sun was setting, leaving the moon to conquer the night. A bird tweetered it' sorrow regret away and bidded the day goodbye. Mary-Alice sat on the balcony floor and heard mother's calling thier children in and she went in as well.

She unpacked a few things here and there, and then decided to order Chinese for dinner. She searched in the phone book for a Chinese take-out and called. In about a half an hour she was eating steamed vegetables and dumplings. She thought how her first day of college was going to be like as she chewed on a piece of carrot. Her eyes were sagging and caught sight of the clock that ticked in the living room wall. Nine-thirty it read with the big hand on six and the little hand on nine. Better go to bed

-Next Day after College-

I can't believe how much work the teachers left me! She commented to herself. Her little black briefcase that she had bought was now overfilled with papers. Her arms were overloaded with books and notes. She cursed as she walked through the streets. Then a little coffee-bookshop caught her eye. She stopped in her tracks and went straight in.

It was a quaint place overstuffed with books and had a small coffee bar. the aroma of flying pages and rosted coffee filled the atmosphere in the store. She could hear the turning of pages and the occasional footsteps of a customer trying to find the right book. She pulled up a chair form a wooden table with a glossy finish. She set down her belongings and started to write her essay about the pop-culture nowadays. She couldn't believe that she chose Journalism for her Major. It was just too much work, but she had to stick with it. She flipped through the pages of her textbook and scribbled down words on a paper. She needed a break after a few hours. She needed coffee. She went up to the counter and took a menu from a slot by the cash register

"Can I help you?" asked a voice that came from in front of her.

"Oh! I still haven't decided yet," Mary said and looked up. He eyes met up with those of another. He had long shiny brown hair and two gorgeous icy-blue eyes. He wore a green smock and brown pants. His smile was kind and inviting, it sort of reminded Mary-Alice of her father

"That's okay." he said with a smile. "Take your time." She blushed in embarrassment.

"Would you care to recommend me something?" she asked since she could not decide for herself.

"I'd recommend the French Vanilla cappuccino," he responded.

"Okay. I think I'll try that then, please, she said.

"One French Cap, coming right up!" he announced and with that he started making her order. Then he came back with a steaming cup of coffee with foam atop of it. "Here you are. That'll be three dollars and twenty-five cents."

She got out a five dollar bill and handed it to him. He took the bill and gave her change. She got her coffee and headed towards where her belongings were.

"Hey!" te brown-haired guy said. "What's your name? I never did ask."

"My name's Mary-Alice, se responded. "What's yours?"

"My name's Michael, but my friends call me Mike," he responded.

Mary-Alice smiled. "It's nice to meet you Mike," she said. They went on talking about what they liked to do and many other subjects that people talk about on their first encounter. They had a nice chat for over a half an hour.

"Mary, are you doing anything this week?" Mike asked her.

Before she could answer, a guy came up behind Mike. He had brown hair just like Mike and green eyes that were the color new spring leaves. He wore a green smock like Mike, blue jeans, and green converse.

"Time to fly away love birds," the guy commented, and then he turned to Mike. "It's time to go. Our shift is over."

"Yeah, okay just hold on a sec," Mike told the guy and he grabbed a napkin. Then he got a pen, scribbled something on the napkin, and handed it to Mary-Alice. "Call me up some time," he whispered in her ear. Then he kissed on her cheek and was gone.

Marty-Alice touched her cheek where Mike had kissed her. She smiled and looked at the napkin. It had a phone number on it along with a message: Would you like to go ut sometime? She was shocked and excited. So many feelings she couldn't descrbe were flowing through her mind. She had never been asked out!

She went back to her table. She tried to finish her essay on pop-culture but her mind was on Mike. she just couldn't seem to get her mind off of him. So she collected her things and was out the door. Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike. She sang in her head.

Mary-Alice skipped and dance all the way home. She was so joyful she could't bear it. She just had to show it off to the whole world. She waned to shout it out to the heavens above. then she felt a drop of water on he nose then on her cheek, her eyes, her arm. It began to rain, but she made nothing of it. She jumped in every puddle accidentally wetting two elderly women. She apologized to them by telling them that she was in love and then hugged and kissed them. She arried to her apartment a few moments later and she was dripping water everywhere. She dropped her things and jumped on the sofa. She wor a huge grin on her face which the turned into puzzlement. Why did I hug and kiss those old ladies?
