Photographs And Still Frames In Your Mind, chapter 1

The night was finally calm and showed little evidence of the chaos which had been only hours before. Where thousands of people had been screaming in unison, now, there was no one. No one to hear the quiet footsteps. No one to see the figure on the abandoned stage walking towards the front.

A cool breeze ruffled his untidy black hair. He was grateful for it after the heat that had gone before. Another city, another concert, another night doing what he loved the most in the world, but tonight something had returned to him. Something which distracted him. The other guys had noticed how distant he seemed as he failed to even notice them as they shared a drink. Finally he had just gotten up and left without a word and his legs had led him back up to the front of the stage.

He sat down on the edge and listened to the distant sound of his friends, laughing and joking, as they carried to him in the cool night air.

This wasn't the first time the memory had come back to haunt him. It often did, but this time he could think of nothing else. Not since that girl had asked for his autograph.

Not long after the show had finished he had been signing autographs when he'd asked one girl, "And what's your name?"

"Kate," she replied.

He signed her book and said, "That's a nice name," but he sounded distant. "I used to know someone called Kate... a long time ago... " With that he turned around and walked away.

But despite the time he could not forget what had happened. Now he looked back searching for answers where none could be found. How has it started in the first place? There was a question he did know the answer to and one which he focused his attention on. It was as far from how it had ended as he could get.

It had been the first day back at school when he had first seen her on a warm, late summer morning. As he concentrated on the cool breeze, and tried to lose himself in the memory, it was as though he as 16 again, and sitting on the wall outside Pinole Valley High, with Mike, his best friend. How many times had me replayed that moment?

"Back again! How redundant!" He commented to himself.

Mike stopped going "Dirnt, dirnt," under his breath and said "Maybe this year will be more... " he paused for a moment. It was school! "More eventful."

At that moment a girl came along the street toward the school gates. She paused a moment to glance at a piece of paper in her hand and then at the school sign. Many others had passed and he would never be able to recognize them again, but not this girl. She was wearing a black t-shirt, black trousers, black and white converse, but what made her stand out the most was her hair. It was died black with thick electric blue streaks. Against the others she stood out. She was different.

She looked around and spotted them. She walked over and said, "Hi, I'm Kate. Do you know where the reception is?"

"Ermmm... " he said struggling for words.

"You'd have thought you'd know by now Billie!" Mike joked. "It's over there. Follow the signs."

"OK. Thanks. See you round."

As she walked away Billie ran his fingers through his saggy black hair. "Have you ever seen her before?"

"Nope," said Mike. "She must be new. Come on, were gonna be late on the first day and were sat right outside."
