I think this is how bad it's gotten
How many times has any of us wondered if we were emo? *raises hand*
How many of us was ASHAMED when we thought that? *raises hand*
Point is, what should we been ashamed about?
I looked it up. Lately, I'v been thinking that. I know, labels are wrong, but I don't give a shit about them. I don't care if I'm labelled, everyone else is whether they like it or not. So, anyways, now that that's cleared up, I looked up the term 'emo', and this is what it said:
The term emo originated in the 1980s to describe a genre of music stemming from the hardcore punk music scene in Washington, D.C. Early bands labeled emo (or sometimes emocore) in this scene included Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Fugazi.[2][3][4] The term emo as a music genre has become broader and broader with time, and now is loosely understood to mean "rock music with emotionally-based lyrics or effect," which could be used to describe a broadly and poorly defined group of nearly every popular (or unpopular) rock band. The term is so loosely defined because its definition is still the subject of debate.[1][2][3] Emo now often refers to a person's fashion, personality, or both, as well as the music genre. Emo, however, is not a common word used among most parts of the world, because, said previously, it is a slang word. The reference of "being" emo is usually a way to insult or mock another person.

Okay, so why should we be ashamed? It's this thing called sterotypes...
People say emos cut themselves, are always depressed, and other shit. Who led us to believe that? Ignorant people, and now the MEDIA believes it and is telling us this. However, though some kids do that, that's not the case.
There ARE emos who DON'T cut, some who aren't depressed, and are pretty fucking happy with their lives. They are emo for the music. People who are depressed and cut are either attention seekers or they seriously need help.
Attention sekers- they do it for the attention. They have perfectly normal lives, and they ust feel like complaining.
Kids who need help seriously need help. They don't need kids asking them stupid shit about scars and whether they cut; in other words, THEY DON'T NEED PEOPLE ON THEIR ASSES 24/7!!! They don't need the media making it seem shameful to be emo. Actually, no Emo needs that. They already get enough shit.
And another thing, people shouldn't use the term "emo" to describe someone who is depressed.
Sorry this turned into a rant, it's just the way I feel.
So anyways, I was thinking about it and I thought, 'Why should I be ashamed if I'm emo? If I am, GREAT! I know what emo is and I know I don't fit under those sterotypes.'
That's all I have to say...

Well, about 23097423 people have written blogs on labels. And much of them are saying the same thing, but now they've turned a little on the focus of the media.
It's true, emo has become more than a genre of music. People use it to label others, people get insulted and it goes on.
I've been called emo before - and, at first, I took it badly. Now I don't give a sh*t. I can listen to the music I want, I can dress how I want, and I don't care what other people think.
In the end, it comes down to ignorance, like Vegemite said. People can't accept others for who they are, it becomes a bigger issue and then the media blows it all out of proportion.

I hate all things ignorant. And the media is one of them. I hate the medias view of emo, my view of emo is fine.

I agree with you 100%.
I just don't care anymore. The media's just ruined it.

i agree with everything you just said. I was just recently asked if i was emo by some emo girl at school, i said no. But i pretty much look emo sometimes, but its not the way i feel. I wear alot of black and darker colours though, but thats a personal choice and its because i lik darker colours. It is unfair of the media. Emos dont deserve that sh*t, whatever did they do to deserve that, seriously. Yes, people who cut are either attention seekers or something is really digging into their lives. I've personaly never cut myself, but i've scraped the word "metal" into the skin of my left arm...it didnt really hurt, but it looked great, kind of a substitute tattoo, so you know why i did it. I'm an exhibitionist to some degree. The media has ruined so many things, not only emo.
