i'm sure everyone will know what it is, but just in case...

euthanasia is the process of putting someone, who is ill and can never get better, to death before they naturally die, in as much as a painfree way as possible.

i'm not entirely sure. i think, if the person is conscious, they should have the choice. if they want to die instead of go through agony until they die naturally, then i'd say its their body, and their choice. but thinking about it from the familys point of few, it must be so horrible to put a loved one to death. but then, don't they just want to make their ill family member to be happy?

what do u guys think.....?

I think it should be their own choice.

It is their life, and if they choose to be given this treatment to stop the pain, then that's their choice...

but I think it's wrong to kill someone who still wants to live, even if they are going to doe anyway.

I think that they should have the choice
if they are unconcious the doctors deserve the choice, not the family or anything, the doctors
they know what's best, they can make the descision with or without input from the family
but the doctors have the most information so they have the most informitive opinions

If they want to die, but are unable to do it themselves, I think euthanasia is ok then. But if the person is unconscious, and hasn't said anything about wanting to go, then he/she should live as long as he/she dies naturally. Family should definitely not decide the thing for he/her. It's everyone's own life, so they can do whatever they want with it.

its true that they have the most information, but at the same time, the doctors don't know them, they're a patient to them. this person is probably the whole world to their family....they might want to spend more time with them before they go.

But how can they decide if they are too ill??? thats what always puzzled me.

i think they should have a choice. if they want to die then they should get what they want instead of been forced to suffer even more....

i think it should be made legal. (im in the uk where its illegal). it should be a person's choice when they die. if they want to go, i dont think other people have the right to tell them they cant.

I think if the person chooses to then its a good thing, I kinda think its bad aswell because I think people should die naturally its just my way of thinking really but if there in so much pain and they have the choice and all then I think its good.

I'm doing research on it for english!

Well if the person decides to make the decision the its all good. I mean if i was really ill and not goin to get any better just worse, then i'm sure that i would rather die than go through the pain of dying slowly! I feel sorry for the people who's loved one's asked them to give them an overdose because they would rather die with some dignity than as i said before slowly and painfully! I mean, it's just an act of true love isnt it...not wanting to see your love ones in pain and going by their wishes? As long as concent is given by the person whos life it is then i agree with it...

I think that it could be wrong if you're not going to die in pain due to natural causes, then why do it? But if you're going to be in a lot of pain, then it should be ok, becase then you are sparing yourself from suffering, and those around you from seeing you suffer, because that makes them suffer because they feel bad and want to help you but can't. But you SHOULD make the most of the time that you are given.

Just to let people know, that there are 4 different types of eunthanasia.

Passive Euthanasia: Hastening the death of a person by altering some form of support and letting nature take its course. For example: Removing life support equipment (e.g. turning off a respirator) or
Stopping medical procedures, medications etc., or
Stopping food and water and allowing the person to dehydrate or starve to death.
Not delivering CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) and allowing a person, whose heart has stopped, to die.

Perhaps the most common form of passive euthanasia is to give a patient large doses of morphine to control pain, in spite of the likelihood that the pain-killer will suppress respiration and cause death earlier than it would otherwise have happened. Such doses of pain killers have a dual effect of relieving pain and hastening death. Administering such medication is regarded as ethical in most political jurisdictions and by most medical societies.

These procedures are performed on terminally ill, suffering persons so that natural death will occur sooner. It is also done on persons in a Persistent Vegetative State - individuals with massive brain damage who are in a coma from which they cannot possibly regain consciousness.

Active Euthanasia: This involves causing the death of a person through a direct action, in response to a request from that person. A well known example was the mercy killing in 1998 of a patient with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) by Dr. Jack Kevorkian, a Michigan physician. His patient was frightened that the advancing disease would cause him to die a horrible death in the near future; he wanted a quick, painless exit from life. Dr. Kevorkian injected controlled substances into the patient, thus causing his death. Charged with 1st degree murder, the jury found him guilty of 2nd degree murder in 1999-MAR.

Physician Assisted Suicide: A physician supplies information and/or the means of committing suicide (e.g. a prescription for lethal dose of sleeping pills, or a supply of carbon monoxide gas) to a person, so that they can easily terminate their own life. The term "voluntary passive euthanasia" (VPE) is becoming commonly used. One writer 3 suggests the use of the verb "to kevork". This is derived from the name of Dr. Kevorkian, who has promoted VPE and assisted at the deaths of hundreds of patients. Originally he hooked his patients up to a machine that delivered measured doses of medications, but only after the patient pushed a button to initiate the sequence. More recently, he provided carbon monoxide and a face mask so that his patient could initiate the flow of gas.

Involuntary Euthanasia: This term is used by some to describe the killing of a person who has not explicitly requested aid in dying. This is most often done to patients who are in a Persistent Vegetative State and will probably never recover consciousness.

they should be able to decide for themselves, but if they cant communicate you should kill them peacefully only if they are in excrutiating pain(and passed by some medical council or what-not) and the doctors have the backing of the family

I think people should be allowed to have euthanasia. I know I would much prefer to just go to sleep after months of sturggeling with an illness and know that I'm not going to get better. It's must be a nice, peaceful death, and the fmaily must know that they are going in peace.

I think that euthanasia should be allowed, and that the people should be allowed to decide themselves. If the person is unable to say whether or not they want to die, it should be a deciscion made by the doctors and the family of that person.
