when it's legal to eat humans i will eat animals. animals deserve the same rights as us, not to be bred to be murdered and eaten.
Are you saying we should give dogs the right to vote and pay taxes?

IF all animals were treated equally as humans, then sure they can vote! i mean, im trying nt to sound absurd here. the only difference between us and, say, dogs is thatwe can talk. if dogs were ALLOWED equal rights and ALLOWED to be equals, then they would be totally fine to vote or whatever. like, would you let an illiterate mute vote? yes. because they have the right!

Except animals don't have the same intelligence that we have. I don't they'd be able to comprehend the voting system.

And I doubt we're able to comprehend the intricate heirarchy of, say, an ants nest.
Don't get me wrong- I completely agree with you, but I don't think animals are necessarily less intelligent than we are. We just have different ways of thinking, and this is why animals should not be allowed to vote.

and also the vikings used to eat they're victims

O_O where the hell did you get that from? I’ve read lost and lots about Vikings and that’s gotta be a myth.

Robbie:
The ONLY thing that distinguished us from animals is when we worked out how to use tools, from there one we have been the dominant species without necessarily being the fastest, strongest, smartest or biggest animals on earth.

If dogs took over tomorrow they would consider us 'animals', and would refer to themselves as Dogs. Or woofs. Work the logic out for that one yourself.

Eating humans is considered wrong because of multiple things, somewhere between the legal system and a lot of species rejecting cannibalism in no less than extreme circumstances. Not to mention the fact that most food these days comes sterilised and packaged from supermarkets, if we had to go out and hunt it wouldn't be so unusual.

Actually, that statement is incorrect. Humans are not the only ones to use tools. Some monkeys and even some birds use tools. They figured it out all by themselves. Wink The difference is that we can create tools, not just pick them up from the ground.

Animals think to survive for practical purposes, humans think for MUCH more than that, in much more advanced ways. We are more intelligent. You could allow animals to vote if you wanted.... wouldn't do anything. Animals lack the capability to understand anything required to vote. It isn't that they think differently, its that they can't think how we do.

also humans are a higher form of animal, just for example, you have been caught with no food and you are miles away from anywhere and you see a sheep do you starve to death or do you eat the sheep?

When you say "higher form" do you mean higher up the food chain?

Because if a lion in the african savannah sees a human and she has no other food, she will kill and eat the human. Think

To my mind, just because we can eat something, does not make us higher beings.

But the difference is, humans have the sense to stay away from lions. Unless protected.

I mean, no one would near them unless on a safari where they could quickly get away.

That's what has got us to the top of the food chain. A mix of common sense, intelligence and plain evolution.

Don't get me wrong, animals rights all the way. I'm all for it. But to say were equal to other animals just isn't true.

Humans are not at the top of the food chain. If you don't know this then you haven't studied the food chain close enough. Enev the words 'food chain' imply that there is no top. Chains don't have a top, do they? The deomposers come after us usually, or if a person if just being stupid, maybe a wild animal. The food chain has nothing to do with this.

This is about our brains, our intellectuality and evoution compared with all other speices of the Earth. We have been given opposable thumbs for working with tools, a sense of reason, and inquiring, sense of wonderment for comprehension and understanding. This has led us through some miraculous chain of events to be smarter than other speices. We can have forethought and planning, and we can record history and we can annotated our surroundings through the adaption of our languages. We can improve our old sticks and stones into guns and bombs. This has led us to believe that we are superior, when infact, we're just smarter.

This superiority entwined with our planning and intentions for the future gave an old Celtic, or maybe Assyrian, or Babylonian tribe thousands of years ago, the idea that we could tame animals and keep them as a never ending supply of food instead of tiresome crop growing and irrigation and harvesting...or more, as well as that. And thus, animal farms (Note the Orwell reference.) began. And that's how we get the opinion that we can kill anything to eat it.

No.
Since none of us know how an animal thinks, or can read animal minds, I do believe we have no place in judging their intelligence. We just don't know.

... well yes we can study the way they think. Scientists disect animals brains all the time, thats how we DO know those things.

i am seriously considering becoming one after an article i read recently in Rolling Stone how they treat the pigs and then seeing a picture of a huge pile of dead pigs. it was really sad and now i can't bring myself to eat pork at all. i'm not even really comfortable eating chicken or beef but thats almost all my family eats so its hard. at my house its like you eat meat or nothing at all, they make a huge deal about it like its the most stupid thing they have ever heard of....

Would you like to give me a thorough explanation of how that works?

Let me spend several years in college so I can get a degree in animal anatomy and I'll get right on that ~~

K, Once I find a site that isn't trying to sell me animal brains, or tell me what language chimps are interested in, I'll post about it in the animal thinking thread. If I can't I'll just go get my science book and read the stupid thing, I know its in there.

This is kinda off topic, but in school, every Friday of course is Friesday, and they serve drumsticks. So every lunch, we have a competition to see who can kill the most chickens, i.e. eat the most chicken, and we count the drumsticks to count how many chickens were butchered for our lunch and total it. It's actually quite amusing.

...Oh also, Christmas dinner was lovely this year.
