You should just take the quicky defininition, not the literal translation.

I just want to add at the end because this has always confused me.
Why is it wrong to eat animals but right to eat plants?

Check our the biological differences between plants and animals. Con

Plants have no central nervous system, meaning no brain, and no nerve endings. They can't feel pain, they don't think even when they undergo biological processes or release chemicals, its all controlled by DNA and protein synthesis.

Animals, however, do have a central nervous system. They do have a brain, with nerve endings and they can feel pain. They have to think and all of their processes are not controlled genetically.

At any rate, that still doesn't make it wrong to eat animals. However, if prior to eating them they are kept in horrid conditions, mistreated and painfully killed, that is why it's ok to eat plants and not animals. I think I've misestablished (is that a word?) as someone who thinks eating meat is wrong. I don't. I think what we do before we eat the meat is what's disgusting.

My step-mum is the same, she doesn't eat meat or drink animals' milk, but we've had discussions about it and she said if she raised an animal on a farm herself and made sure it had a good life and a humane slaughter, then she'd have no qualms at all about eating it. As it is, she doesn't agree with the treatment of animals before they're killed for meat, so she won't eat it. Similarly, she doesn't like how cows are treated to get their milk, so she will only drink soya milk.

Sorry I was referring to the people who thought eating animals was wrong because they're a living creature.
So are plants. Yes I'm aware of the differences between the biology of plants and animals because I do Biology, but they still have all the charactaristics of a living thing.

People don't have problems with the fact that it was living. It's exactly what Kurtni said. Animals have a central nervous system and FEEL PAIN. Plants don't. People who are vegetarian/vegan for ethical reasons don't eat animals because they were mistreated during life and slaughtered.

ALSO, if you look at this site: http://www.charityguide.org/volunteer/fifteen/vegetarian-dishes.htm it gives numbers and percentages for how much of our grains, water and forests are going into overfeeding livestock for food. If we all had plant based diets, animals wouldn't be overfed and we wouldn't be using as many plants.

Ok, well in their defense, do they really even need a reason? O_O I mean seriously, it's their eating habits, no one elses. If they make distinctions between different living things, why is that so horrible? Plants and Animals are not even in the same taxonomic kindgom, I really don't see any hypocrisy behind eating plants and not animals.

I know I was just nitpicking. Honestly I'd die if I actually felt bad eating alive things. I wouldn't eat plants, animals, fungi, anything. omgno

whats a vegan
a person who disagrees with killing animals for food, clothes, ect.

that's a vegetarian, vegans don't believe in eating dairy products or vegtables that have been pulled from the ground, they wait for them to fall or something.

nono, thats a fruitarian.
vegan's will eat fruit, but NOTHING that has come from animals.

ino that quote is from ages ago - it could also probably have been already stated, but it annoyed me xD

wikipedia:
Some fruitarians will eat only what falls (or would fall) naturally from a plant, that is: foods that can be harvested without killing the plant. These foods consist primarily of culinary fruits, nuts, and seeds.[6] Some do not eat grains, believing it is unnatural to do so,[7] and some fruitarians feel that it is improper for humans to eat seeds.[8] Others believe they should eat only plants that spread seeds when the plant is eaten.[9] Others eat seeds and some cooked foods.[10]

Some fruitarians use the botanical definitions of fruits and consume pulses,[11] while others include green leafy vegetables[12] and/or root vegetables in their diet. Some occasionally consume some dairy products as well.

k this has probably been said before, but humans have been eating meat since the beginning of time, no?

I know that nowadays, there are horribly cruel killing and slaughtering processes, I've seen the clips.

But I just dont like when vegs use the argument "we were meant to be herbivores" or any variation of that... because we've been eating meat literally forever.

I think a good thing to do is what my family does.. we get our meat from a "family farm" of sorts, rather than whatever mass production slaughterhouse is in the supermarket.. so at least I know that the animals had a decent life, and were killed humanely (as humanely as killing can be, or course...)

Killing Lies:

Its a perfectly logical point...Coolio

At any rate, there is biological evidence to back that up. Our jaw structure is more suited to eating plants, we have a longer digestive track which allows us to get more nutrients out of food like plants, which is unlike most carnivores who have shorter digestive tracks. Meat eaters perspire through their tongues, herbivores have pores, like humans. Meat eaters have very strong hydrochloric acid in their stomaches; humans stomach acid isn't that strong compared to animals live wolves. Humans also have highly developed salivary glands that produce alkaline saliva which plays a role in predigestion of things like grains, carnivores don't have that.

Humans don't have any physical means to kill other animals, we don't have talons or useful teeth. We aren't that strong. Until we developed mentally, we couldn't have survived on meat. So humans haven't always been eating meat; we weren't physically capable of it.

See, with humans, it's hard to say what we were "meant" to eat. Biologically, we are herbivores. However, we're the smarty pants of the animal kingdom. We had the ability to make choices a looooooong time ago, and we could pick the food we ate. Humans chose meat; it doesn't have anything to do with what we were meant to eat.

I have a question: do insects count as meat? Because I just had to do this long report on primates and a lot of them do eat insects and small mammals.

I'd count them. Apart from the fact that crickets are pretty nice to eat, they were living and animate so...if meat is the remains of a dead animal...
