People are always labeling, within the human race..
It doesnt have to be high school stereotypes, it can be stuff like gay, straight, democrat, republican, black, white... everyone categories, because We like to define.
You can go around saying "human being" all you want but its vague as shit, even if you think emo, jock, prep is childish
I mean, being Emo within the jock and prep status of my high school made me feel as if I was not accepted, but then I entered college and nobody made fun of me. I'm not Emo anymore, but I'm me, and that's all I should be.
maybe that's the reason why they don't make fun of you? i mean, you were emo in high school and they mocked you, but when you went to college you weren't emo anymore, so of course they don't make fun of you for being emo
Also in college nobody gives a shit anymore. Nobody makes fun of anybody at all because they know that everybody is different and that their high school years are over.
there's this group of kids at my college who wear like animal-ears headbands and attach animal tails to their pants, and everyone judges them, just sayin.
Also the college has a manga/anime club and everyone still judges those people as well. It never changes. Just due to the sheer number of people at a college compared to a high school makes it less of an issue.

high school never ends
Also, We had a guy at my school who would wear a fake fox-tail, and he had a boyfriend online who was a 'wolf' and theyd post their conversations really publicly, like on their wall on Facebook with stuff like "growls and bites your tail" and so on, but sexually as well, which made people .. not laugh directly at him, more talk about it behind his back =/
But Yeah, society ~needs normalcy, so when someone stands out, we, as a group, feel the need to punish them in a way to either cast them away or get them back into the norm of the group/society .. idk if I'm making sense, but I'm just trying to make sense of this bullying kind of thing
