wow.. thats very impressive. like i said before i have a school of 5000+ kids so controlling them is extremely difficult. I believe my high schoool is one of the largest in the US...

Ours is just below 2000 pupils.. It must be very hard to control 5000

Wow, my school has around 800 students, although there are three schools in my area, two of them being public schools.

There's only 200 kids in my school. I feel so small...where I live is really small.

we have 3 schools on the same property that you walk in between to get to your classes almost like a college.

My primary schoool had 200 kids. Primary school is what we call Kindergarten through to year 6. There were around 30 kids in each year, only one class for each year, but in the year below me there were 40 kids and two classes.

But, I don't know if any other countries have this, but here (Well, in NSW anyways) we have stages. Kindergarten, year one and year 2 is all stage 1. Year 3 and 4 is stage 2. Year 5 and 6 is stage 3. 7 and 8 is stage 4, nine and ten is stage 5, 11 and 12 is stage 6.

Many primary schools have now combined their years into stages, instead of having years. Its really weird. I'll try and explain it properly.

In my old primary school, they combined their classes into stages. So, for stage one, instead of having thirty kids per class, they now have 90 kids in a stage. They then divide this into three classes, once again, but they put the smarter kids in a higer stage than the less smart kids.

So, a kindergarten kid could be in the middle class (Or, if he/she is really smart, the top class) for that stage.

The other stages just have 2 classes, I think.

I think that its a pretty stupid idea. I mean, once they get to highschool, it will be back to normal, and they wouldn't really have a clue what to do.

And, if you are really smart, you would just learn the same thing over and over again until you were able to progress to the next stage.

I think my schools doing fine teaching the students. We've had quite a few High and regular honor roll students.

What annoys me the most though is if someone is not doing well in a class and they blame it on the teacher, saying "they hate me and thats why I'm failing." I dont think thats a legitimate reason for why your not doing your best. Once a girl was not getting along with our study hall teacher and she came up to me one day and said "I dont do anything wrong in that class, I don't know why she doesnt like me," and I looked her straight in the face and told her "well maybe if you did more than just your make-up in class then you might have a little more ease."

My school is the only good one in the back o' beyond around here. You get kids coming from all over.

So i was reading the paper this morning (The Detroit Free Press) and there was an article that caught my attention:

"Last week, the Flordia House passed a bill that would make Flordia the first stat to require high school students to declare a major, just as college students must do. The bill, backedby Gov. Jeb Bush. faces an uncertain future in the Senate. Bush and others say the law would prepare students better for college and the working world and reduce the dropout rate by making school more interesting. Opponets say it would put to much pressure on students about their future. Democrats complained that Republicans were trying to micromanage schools."

I obvioulsy dont live in Flordia but i still have strong opninons on. Im graduating this year and i know what my major will be in college many of my classmates dont. I dont think its fair to force someone to declare a major some people need more time. I have college friends who are still debating on their majors, and to make high school kids choose is outrageous. I can however see the good because i was complaining earlier that there arent classes directed towards my needs and i take a lot of meaningless class and this could help reduce that.

Ok so thats my opinion, and i was just curious to what you all though. Yes we may not all live in Flordia but can you say slippery slope? So any thoughts?

well, the education part is good...i mean, in 2nd grade i was learning stuff my parents didn't know...so we are learning more complex things at a younger age, the problem is...kid's don't care...a few kid's might know exactly what they want to be profession wise, but the majority of kid's really could care less...

one problem is what a lot of others are saying: over packing the class rooms...in elementary school, there were around 35-40 kid's in my grade and around 20 kids in each class...i went to high school, suddenly there's 240 in my grade and 30 some kids in each class...and some of my teachers are getting older and just can't handle that...they just say "Read this chapter and answer the questions." then no one reads it, no one knows what it's about and few pass the test...but in one class we got a younger student teacher, and he made it enjoyable. he interacted with the class and suddenly, everyone understood it all...

also, as for the 'no child left behind' thing...it doesn't work at all (in my school at least) the only thing it did was make it much easier to get good grades. For our PSSA's, you write 2 essays...usually the majority of the class would get 2's or 3's...now almost every single person get's a 4 (which is the best)...so the kid's who truely work hard for their grades, are ending up with the same kid's who give half the effort because they made the standards lower...basically that whole law or whatever it is, is just to make us look smarter than we really are. No one is learning any more, or getting any smarter, we're just staying at the same level but look like we're advancing.

there is stuff in like in history and sciene we should HAVE to know but some stuff is just boring and we are never gonna need to know any of it unless we go on jeparody. I think their are too many kids in a classroom (i.e. not enough teachers) we have terrible 20 year old books that literally fall apart when you pick them up. A unch of our schools have had to add moblie additions becasue theiur aren't enough class rooms. And the decipline (sp?) is either non-exisisting or over the top

I have points that may help you with the burden of school, heres one of them:

1) Just because they like it, doesn't mean you have to.

Everybody's different. People like different things, people do things in different ways. Why should school be an exception? What were they thinking when they designed a school that would teach everyone the same stuff in the same way? Did they really think that would work? Fact is, it doesn't work. Not for everyone, at least. If you prefer to do things your own way, that's a GOOD thing. Those kids who function best when told what to do every second of their lives will probably be working for you someday.

What about those people who assume that just because they did well in school or even liked it, that everyone should be capable of the same results? Don't worry about them. You can't expect everyone to understand you, just as they can't expect everyone to react to school the way they did. You could try to reason with them, but some people just won't change their minds no matter what, so don't lose sleep over them.

First off, don't assume things, how do you know we have issues with the system of schools we have? You don't. Starting a debate with a narrow minded presentation is not a good thing to do. When asking a question it needs to be unbiased, and from there you can state you opinion.

Mandatory School is somthing designed to give you the basic education that you need to successfully function in society. Regardless of what you like, you need to know math, you need to know how to communicate with people in whatever language your country speaks, you need to know history so you arent totally ignorant to the orgins of your culture, ect.

So, if by "those kids who function best when told what to do every second of their lives" you mean those kids who excel and attend school, then I think what you meant to say was not that they "be working for you someday", but that chances are their tax money will end up paying for you when you live in a box because you couldnt get a job.

Now, that is what mandatory education does. After that, you have the choice of attending college or a university to further progress your knowledge in a field of your own choice. However I assure you, any career you choose to get into, you'll need to know math, and you'll need to communicate with people... just like you, and every other kid at school was taught how to do.

There are some things you have to know how to do, regardless of if you like it or not.

I go to a private school and our building is pathetic
last year the roof fell in and the junior high couldn't even get to their lockers (mine was right underneath) We had to pay for it out of our own pockets and donations. also our books are outdated and falling apart. our teachers are underpaid and are leaving every year. but we're still getting a pretty good education despite that. We rely soley on tuition (3,000$ a year*GASP*) (and don't give me any shit that i'm rich because i'm not) I think the state should give private schools some money. (don't hurt me!)

Of course they should. Here, in all states a law was passed saying that all schools would be non secular, free and compulsary. Meaning, there couldn't be any catholic or christian schools, and all the schools would be funded by the government.

But the catholics started their own schools that their pupils paid for, they didn't get any funding. And they didn't until many many years later when one school was falling apart and they idn't have the money to fix it, the principal kept on begging the council to fix it, but they wouldn't, so then he marched all the students down to the local public school and demmanded they take them in.

Of course there wasn't enough room for the students in the public school, so we've had funding from the government since.

Because obviously if all the private schools shut down, the students wouldn't have anywhere to go, there simply aren't enough schools and room in the schools for them.
