You're the best thing in town, chapter 2

I woke up in my bed, confused as to where I was. The last place I remembered being is at my mother in laws house. I turned over to my side and saw Adrienne lying beside me.

It was just a dream.[i]

I got out of bed and decided to make breakfast. I got out some stuff to make some pancakes, when I noticed a photo album laid out on the counter. It was open to a page that I wish it wasn't. There was a picture of my eldest daughter, Jacqueline as the flower girl at my wedding 11 and a half years ago. She was only six years old. I became a father before I was married. My girlfriend got pregnant and left me with the kid. I tried my best to be the best father I could be, for her. I guess that wasn't enough. She ran away when she was fifteen, and I never saw her again. I started to cry a bit.

"Why are you crying, baby?" Adrienne said to me. I turned around to see Adie, looking kind of worried.

"I was looking at the pictures of Jacky." I said.

"Oh. Don't worry. She'll come back home, I promise you." Adie said to me, as she rubbed my shoulders, "By the way, I'm kind of worried about you. Last night you were talking in your sleep again. It was funny listening you at first, but I got concerned in what you were saying. You were talking about me leaving you and stuff like that. At one point you were crying. I tried to wake you up, but I couldn't. Do you remember your dream?"

"Yes, I do, very clearly." I said. I told Adie my whole dream, and when I was done, we were both crying.

"You know I would never leave you. That dream means that there's a surprise in store for you soon. It doesn't mean that I would leave you." Adie said.

"I know, but it seemed so real, like it was actually happening." I said.

"Everyone has a dream like that once in a while so let's forget about it." Adie told me. Adie's mom was a dream reader before she got retired. She learned the skills from her mom. That's how Adie knew this.

"Thanks, babe."

"No problemo, Joe." Adie said. Then we heard one of our kids come running down the stairs.

"Oh, I have to cook the pancakes now," I said, "I almost forgot." As soon as Jakob sat down, the half asleep Joey yelled from upstairs.

"Did somebody say pancakes?"

"Yes." Jakob said. After Jakob said that, Joey sprinted down the stairs, skipping a couple of steps, on the way and sat down at his seat.

"Boy, you must be hungry." Adie said.

"Yeah, I am. I didn't have a meal all day, yesterday. Plus, you know I love pancakes!" Joey rasped, still trying to catch his breath.

"Why didn't you eat at all, yesterday." Adie said, looking at me. I shrugged and kept cooking the pancakes.

"I was experimenting if I could go a day without a meal. Hey, why's the photo album out?" Joey said.

"Oh, I was looking at some pictures last night, and forgot to put them away." Adie said.

"Is that Juliet at your wedding, Dad?" Joey said.

"Yes, it is. Breakfast is ready guys." I said as I put down a tray of pancakes on the table." I said.

"Will she ever come back, Daddy? I don't really remember her that well and I would like to meet her." Jakob questioned his father.

"I don't know Jakob, I don't know." I said. We ate our breakfast and then Joey went upstairs to finish his homework and Jakob went outside with Adie, to ride his bike. I decided to stay inside and read last month's Rolling Stone, my favourite magazine. I was reading an article, when something caught my eye.

Panic! At the Disco: a potential band to make it mainstream, this year.

[i] Panic! At the Disco, a band from a small town in Las Vegas, has finally hit it big. Just out of high school, these 18 year olds, decided to stop covering Blink-182 songs and write their own music, just three years ago. "Some of our songs are political, and some are about my girlfriend." The pop-punk band's front man, Brendon Urie said. "We are kind of two faced." Decaydence, a record company owned by Pete Wentz, sent a talent agent to a club in Las Vegas, called Punked Out! They watched all the underground bands, but only one caught their eye, Panic! At the Disco. The band was signed right after, their gig. Their first MTV they are going on tour with bands like Hellogoodbye, and The Academy Is... I ran outside, to show Adie the picture and article. She would want to see her step daughter.

"Adie, look what I found." I called out to my wife.

"What?" Adie said in a pissed of tone.

"It's Jacky, in the Rolling Stone. I know where she is now. Las Vegas, where her boyfriend lives. He is the lead singer in some band called Panic! In a banjo!" I said.

"Panic! in a banjo!" Adie said. She stumbled over and started to laugh really hard.
"It's Panic! At the Disco." She was laughing so hard that she was crying and had tear streaks from the eyeliner she was wearing.

"Oh well, same thing." I said. She took the magazine from my hand and saw that I was right. Jacqueline was with some boy in Las Vegas.

"She looks really different, but that's definitely her." Adie said. "Can you take care of Jakob, well I just step inside for a bit."

"Sure, no problemo, Adriano" I said.

Adie's pov

Boy, do I miss my stepdaughter. She was always like a real daughter to me. It was a relief that she was okay. I wonder how she got all the way to Las Vegas. Well, I guess I won't know until she comes home. Then I remembered that I had her cell number. But I had lost it, so I couldn't call her. Oh, well. Then the phone rang.

"Hello," I said into the receiver, "who is this?"

"Hi, Adie. This is Jacqueline. Sorry I never called. I've been busy with my job." Jacky said.

"Oh my god, Jacky. I missed you so much. How are you doing?" I said

"Good, I wanna come home with Brendon, my... erm... boyfriend to tell you some good news."
"Really? Oh my god! When?" I said.

"I was thinking tomorrow, for Dad's B-day." Jacky said.

"Well, that's a good idea for a birthday present!" I said

"If you are wondering, I'm already in town, so anytime is good."

"How about, 1:30. We are throwing a party at 1:00, but if you come later, it will be more of a surprise."

"Sounds great! So, I'll see ya tomorrow." Jacky said.

"Ya, see you tomorrow." I said and I hung up. What are the chances? Today we were just talking about her and now she is coming tomorrow. I can't wait to see my stepdaughter. Boy, Billie is sure in for a surprise.
