Maybe it's not a valid reason for you. There are probably enough resources where ever you live to cope with the population, so you could have as many boys and girls as you would like. But in countries like China where they have a 'one child policy' it's a pretty valid reason.
In China, it is not a valid reason.
In China, female children are not wanted.
In China, baby girls are dead meat.
yeah it may not be right in your eyes but you gotta admit it's still a pretty valid reason if you only get one child.
Explain, plz.
In western society sex-prefence is purely superficial, and many couples will try again if they want a boy but had a girl the first time.
In some eastern societies sex-preference is a much deeper issue. It's not just 'oh I want to have a daughter so we can go shoe shopping together'. There are ancient traditions that say the first born should be a boy. Also only boys can carry on the family name, only boys get the good jobs, so only boys can support their family. In poorer regions having a son instead of a daughter can mean the difference between living in poverty or living a comfortable life. So if you are only allowed to have one child, you'd want it to be a boy. |

but i have heard of mothers having abortions simply cos the baby is not the gender desired.
now THAT is disgusting and incredibly inhumane That is insane. Even though I support abortion, I really do think the mother needs a valid reason, not just because "Idon'twannahaveababygirlewww."

Now, I think that honestly it's just a complicated thing and that you'd have to really experience it to understand that position. Motherhood, I think, is if not the strongest, one of the strongest loves there is and when it comes to the point of making a decision like that...there's really no 'right' or 'wrong'.
I just can't say until I'm faced with that situation...because that happening can completely change your ideas about it. |

Come on, you must have something more..valid. Those are the medical reasons, but personally.
I really feel that it above all the mother's choice. She is the one who will be dealing with the child, and if she isn't going to give it a good home, or take care of it, I don't think she should have it just to shuttle it off into an adoption agency.
I agree that some reasons are ridiculous, and stupid, and shouldn't be allowed, but I don't think we should be making the decisions for people. |

China is not a pro-abortion country. There are provinces and areas who strongly encourage abortion if a second child is expected, but the whole issue of mother's having forced abortions is false. They are often confronted and persuaded to abort, but in the end it is the mother's choice. It's the media's screwed proportions doing their magic again, rather like London underground maps.
The point of the one child policy was not so that every mother could only ever have one child, but to encourage it. That's why child benefits are stripped and taxes increased for parents with two children. For some reason, the West has to veiw this critically and scrutinize every aspect of the Chinese government's quite good plan in my opinion, to make China a better country. There are a few loop holes, but it is hard to control one billion people, and I give them credit for trying. |
