I watched Fast Food Nation today. One of my co-workers watched it quite a while ago and she told me that after she saw it, she decided she didn't want to eat beef anymore. When she went to go get lunch that day, she got something that came with chicken in it instead.

I can completely understand why she would choose to avoid beef after seeing the movie and actually seeing some things that go on in the industry. But what I don't understand is why she thought that other animals were treated any better in a slaughterhouse. I don't understand why she thought it might be less disgusting to eat a chicken than a cow.

The movie just made me want to be a vegan even more than I did before. Instead of just a vegetarian.
There is a theory in animal intellegence and biological ethics about the brain size in comparison to the size of the animal which could mean that it is more aware of its environment and has the ability to imagine, making it more human-like. So, they may think that they are taking a step closer to vegetarianism, but they are infact furthering human specism, by highlighting the idea of humans as a superior species. So it is ironic, is what I am tryig to get at.

Oh, I remember another pint in this satirical ramble about the damage that vegetarians do. They cause people to loose their jobs because there are many people relient on the primary industry of farming and food processing and these people are usually already on the verge of poverty. So vegetarianism contributes to poverty. Lol. I just really enjoyed these really outrageous claims.

Is it bad that I actually feel worse for the animals being treated badly than anyone who may or may not have lost their job as a result of my veganism?

Some good advice:

I recently realized that if you're not going to fly Air India, it sucks to be a vegetarian.

I think you should have more sympathy for an animal holocaust than some person losing their job

okay I think it's wrong how viciously they kill the animals. I mean, it's truly sick.
But honestly, I see no problem in eating them, because it's just how the food chain works.

I get where you are coming from and I somehow agree with it, but as Alex said I don't like the way they're raised to die in terrible conditions, pumped full of steroids and then attacked with a chainsaw or something.

Personally, if I were to eat meat, I would do what Alex does.

I'm a vegetarian and I love it.
I think that animals should live just like us, and we shouldn't decide if an animal lives or dies.
Been one for just about 3 years now ^_^
It kinda sucks becasue I live right near Philly, and guess what is from Philly?
Cheesesteaks.
If I wasn't a vegetarian I'd eat like 5 in a day (just kidding, but not really)
I'm good though, because there's this restaurant where I live that sells vegan ones so I'm happy ^_^

Just thought yous would like to know.

I'm fine with vegans and shit I just dont like PETA they are like to extreme

Oh my god I fucking hate PETA you have no idea. There is a reason that vegetarians and vegans have the unfair stereotype that we're all crazy lunatics who throw paint on people wearing leather and we go around bombing science labs, and it's PETA. How many people actually do that? Not many. How many people get seen doing it because PETA feels the need to broadcast psychotic idiot animal rights activists going about activism in the completely wrong way? A ton.

I think it's possible to fight for every cause peacefully, and using violence and destroying other peoples property to make a statement isn't going to change anything. Sure, the members of PETA are all for it. But the people wearing fur? or the people eating meat? That just makes them think animal rights activists are psychos and they don't get taken seriously. PETA are their own worse enemy in most cases.

What I really hate about PETA is the fact that they find some slaughter house in some remote region of the world where the government doesn't regulate meat production and they take some horrible footage... then try and pass it off as if that's what happens everywhere/ That's so shady and manipulative, and they're flat out lying to the people who have put trust in their organization. Sorry to say, meat companies are going to slaughter animals in the most cost efficient way possible. That is not some angry man beating cows with a bat, PETA. Rolling Eyes

I also can't stand the fact that they receive millions and millions of dollars every year in donations, and they have opened one animal shelter. And, with those millions and millions of dollars (tax exempt dollars I'll add) they don't even have a no kill shelter. They can clearly afford it. However, then they would have to stop using all the donations they receive to help animals for their ridiculous advertising, and clearly that won't ever happen. I think I made a thread about PETA in here somewhere, I should find it.

Coolio rant over.

Alright.
Well, our bodies aren't made for meat. (Don't feel like explaining everything, but our teeth, jaw structure, intestine length and our digestive process- we need to cook meat)
But I feel it's not our natural instinct to kill an animal anyway.
Put a baby in a crib with a cow/chicken/whatever and some apples
Then, put a baby lion in it's natural habitat with an apple and another animal.
Our natural instinct tells us to eat the apple, or defend ourselves if it really tried to attack us.
The lion's natural instinct tells it to eat the other animal.

And we aren't killing animals naturally anymore anyway.
Plus, there are other options and we can live off of it.

I hope this makes sense. I'm not that good at explaining things.

lmfao okay really.

Actually, we have the largest diet out of any animal. we're omnivores, which [according to wikipedia] means: "Omnivores are species that eat both plants and animals as their primary food source. They are opportunistic, general feeders not specifically adapted to eat and digest either meat or plant material exclusively."
yes, if you eat undercooked pork, you can get little cysts in your muscles. [I forget what the disease is called] but that is because of evolution, we're not as tough as we used to be, and cannot break down certain bacteria. Although, there is a man who eats rotten meat, but whatever, that's different. Even if we need to cook our meat, and cannot eat it raw, we still need to eat it.
Yes, there are definatley different things you can eat instead of meat. But you said that they treat animals inhummanely. If you didn't know, there are free-range farms where they're fed a natural vegetarian diet, aren't injected with anything, and live happily on fields, rather than being clustered together. you can always get meat from these free-range farms. Free-range chicken and eggs are VERY common and easy to find, but cow farms are not as common, but can still find it easily. ...if that makes sense. I personally like to keep things as natural as possible, don't eat much processed foods [I'll have butter, bread, pasta, ice cream, cheese... but not something like cheetos.] Which is why I could never be vegan. Coolio

But you know, I'd rather have people be vegetarians rather than them being people that eat meat from farms that treat their animals like piles of crap.
And I didn't really understand you with the lion apple and animal thing. Coolio I mean, I'd eat the apple, cause I need viatmins and minerals, but I also need the animals meat. Unless that animal was a giraffe and could easily kill me, I'd eat it.

Yeah, there's -free range-. But they're still killing the animals. Yes, it's better than stacking chickens in a cage and injecting them with growth hormones, but they're still being killed. What if people were doing that with other humans? Yeah, let's take some people that we don't understand, maybe let them run around in a field until they grow up, then let's kill them to be consumed. But it's ok because we let them run around in a field.

It's just disgusting to me to eat something that should be living a full life, out in it's natural habitat with a family and a little home. Especially when green leafy plants that don't have a central nervous system are so tasty. ^_^

yes, as animals, we are killing the animals we want.
these animals that we eat are domesticated. I think since humans greatest strength [now, at least] is our intelligence, we use that to make tools to raise our animals. I mean, we kill our animals the way we do, and other animals kill their prey the way they do. Some may sufforcate their animals, some drown them, whos to say that's okay? Out in the wild, a baby animal could hurt itself, whether it's a gash, broken leg, whatever. Then the prey come along and kill the animal. I don't think it led a full life. But that could just be something different. Dno
I don't see how living on a big field with plenty of great food and water isn't living in a natural and healthy habitiat.
