I don't actually know any of his stuff but I know of DJ Shadow, who made an album (Endtroducing...) made entirely of samples, and apparently it's really good.
OH AND
as a twopence on the subject
I dislike the way that every mainstream pop/RnB song nowadays has a guest rapper who contributes f-all normally except for a useless rap at the beginning and in the middle. it doesn't bring anything to the music, it's totally gratuitous imho.

oh also, if anyone on this site wants to go schlepping about with the whole 'rap artists promote drug use' etc. etc., i'd like to point out that we're on a freakin' green day site. their name came from smoking weed all day... if my age-13-fact-collectin-memory serves me well.

Some sampling's done really well, then some of it is just obnoxious.
Frontier Psychiatrist by the Avalanches is fantastic for sampling.
it is!! it was used in my seminar last week as an example of postmodernism actually
They were supposed to make a new album but I have no idea what's happened to it. They were having copyright issues which sucks.
Awesome! I used it in a bunch of music essays before.

Ok, apparently it was actually just a hiatus, but I swear when it happened the press billed it as his retirement

I've never heard that before. He still makes music so that's weird.

Yeah, I know. it was after he released Curtain Call and didn't do anything for a few years, but I know I read in the magazines I used to read that he was done for good. clearly he had a rethink

eminem
i was such a huge massive fan of him when i was younger (yeah, i was into rap a lot before i got into ~rock), and i still love his pre-retirement era, and he's actually the reason why i hate people talking shit about rap. i mean, non-eminem rap is bad and he's just a lyrical genius and a great exception that not all rappers fall into the 'drugs and hoes' category, cause even if sometimes that is what his songs are about, there is so much more in his lyrics besides that.
i think that everyone should listen to the eminem show once in their lives cause it's just one of the best cds ever.
