TORCHWOOD

Image

Torchwood follows the adventures of a team of investigators as they use alien technology to solve crimes, both alien and human.

This new British sci-fi crime thriller, from Russell T Davies, follows the team as they delve into the unknown. They are fighting the impossible while keeping their everyday lives going back at home.

The cast includes John Barrowman (Doctor Who) as the enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness, the ever-watchful heart of the team guarding against the fragility of humankind.

Eve Myles (Doctor Who, Belonging) plays Gwen Cooper, initially an outsider whose first encounter with Torchwood sparks a burning curiosity to get to the truth and throws her into an unfamiliar but exciting world.

Burn Gorman (Bleak House) plays the raw but charming medic, Owen Harper, and Naoko Mori (Absolutely Fabulous) is Toshiko Sato, the team member who specialises in all things technical.

Torchwood is written by Russell T Davies and Chris Chibnall, with contributing writers including PJ Hammond, Toby Whithouse and Helen Raynor.

The series is CONFIRMED as airing on Sunday 22nd October 2006 - with a simutaneous broadcast on both BBC One and BBC Three! Episode two will follow immediately after on BBC Three, but for BBC One fans it's going to be a long wait for the second episode. In a bid to get as many fans buying a freeview box, episode two and the other eleven episodes won't be shown on BBC One until the New Year.

Trailers below.

Rumoured episode outlines:

EPISODE 1: 'Everything Changes' by Russell T Davies
When Torchwood arrives on the scene of a brutal murder, WPC Gwen Cooper's burning curiosity is challenged. Their attitude, their approach and their technology is at odds with everything she believes in. But investigating the investigators leads her into a dark, paranoid world she never imagined existed.

EPISODE 2: 'Day One' by Chris Chibnall
An alien addicted to sex is let loose on Cardiff's nightlife. Torchwood must track down the creature's new host and in doing so, confront a violent new form of love in the 21st century.

EPISODE 3: 'Ghost Machine' by Helen Raynor
Torchwood discovers a machine that allows them to view the ghosts that walk among us. Using it, prompts Owen to investigate an unsolved crime - one that could change all their futures.

EPISODE 4: 'The Trouble With Lisa' by Chris Chibnal
There's a dark secret in the basement of the Hub. Even Jack is unaware of it, but Ianto knows. And he'll go to any lengths, sacrifice anything and anyone, to protect what's down there.

EPISODE 5: 'Small Worlds' by Peter J. Hammond
Jasmine is a withdrawn but intelligent child whose new 'friends' exploit her suppressed anger, and while investigating this, Jack encounters elemental enemies from his past that are determined to harm those closest to him.

EPISODE 6: 'Countrycide' by Chris Chibnall
Upon entering an apparently deserted village in the Brecon Becons, the Torchwood team is separated. Finding his people are the prey in a savage game of cat and mouse Jack faces a team of ruthless hunters far more skilled in surviving outside the confines of the city than he. [Insert joke about sheep-shagging here.]

EPISODE 7: 'Greeks Bearing Gifts' by Toby Whithouse
Tosh gains the ability to read the minds of those closest to her but as she becomes party to their darkest secrets, she realises not only is this is a powerful curse, but one impossible to break.

EPISODE 8: 'They Keep Killing' by Paul Tomalin & Dan McCulloch
Using alien technology to interrogate the victims of a serial killer, Gwen learns that the common link is dangerously close to home. And the resurrection device has a deadly secret of its own.

EPISODE 9: 'Invisible Eugene' by Jacquetta May
A hit-and-run victim, Eugene, was a bit of a nobody, and always convinced that aliens were coming to Earth, specifically to retrieve technology in his possession. Now Gwen finds herself drawn into his world and realises Eugene may still be helping her locate the 'aliens' - despite him being dead.

EPISODE 10: 'Combat' by Noel Clarke
The team discovers a ring who are kidnapping Weevils - wild alien creatures that have come through the Rift and are hiding on Earth - which leads Owen down a dark path to confront the future of his own existence.

EPISODE 11: 'Out of Time' by Cath Tregenna
A small passenger plane from the 1950's flies through the rift and lands in Cardiff 2006. Torchwood is drawn into strong personal relationships as they help the three temporal immigrants adapt to contemporary life.

EPISODE 12: 'Captain Jack Harkness' by Cath Tregenna
Transported back to the Blitz, Jack and Tosh find themselves facing a dark secret from Jack's past, one he hoped and believed had been buried for good.

EPISODE 13: 'Apocalypse' by Chris Chibnall
The Rift is violently fracturing further, and Jack realises that Torchwood is destined to be drawn into one vast battle that will leave nothing and no one at Torchwood unchanged...

I'm really looking forward to episodes 2, 5, 10 (Noel Clarke, Noel Clarke!) and 12. I'm wondering about these "secrets" of Jack's. Shall the Doctor get a mention?

John interview (HE'S GETTING MARRIEED. XD. YAY FOR HIM AND SCOTT):

"Actor John Barrowman didn't need a TARDIS to take him into space. All it took was the news that Captain Jack Harkness would be getting his own show and he was over the moon, writes Nicola Hicks.

When we last saw Captain Jack in Doctor Who, he was stranded on a satellite many thousands of years in the future. He'd heroically faced down a Dalek invasion to protect his new friends, The Doctor and Rose – but his fate was unknown.

Now Jack's back in Russell T Davies's dark and sexy sci-fi thriller, Torchwood. In the new series, the Time Agent from the 51st century is at the helm of Torchwood, an elite, alien-fighting organisation on the front line in the battle to protect the human race.

"Jack heads up a team of secret agents who are separate from the Government, outside police jurisdiction and beyond the United Nations. At Torchwood they answer to no one but themselves. They make their own rules," explains John Barrowman, who plays the enigmatic action man with the mysterious past.

"Jack's the leader and the glue – he keeps everyone together. He's the hero ... although I don't think he'd call himself a hero, he'd just call himself a man who does the job because it needs doing."

But, says the actor, the journey from his terrifying Dalek encounter to 21st-century Cardiff – home of the Hub, Torchwood's top-secret HQ – has left its mark on Jack.

"Jack's a little bit darker and he's a little bit angrier than when we last saw him. After all, he was ditched on that satellite and who wouldn't be angry about that?" he says.

"Towards the end of Doctor Who, Jack was becoming more human – I mean human in the sense that he was starting to feel for other people rather than just thinking about himself. As Torchwood begins, he's lost some of that. He doesn't always consider other people's feelings – his priority is the good of the world."

Some things, however, never change.

"He's still fun, he still has his dry sense of humour and I think he's still sexy," says the actor, revealing that Jack is back to his old tricks, putting his moves on everyone and, well, everything.

"It doesn't have to have a pulse for Jack to fancy it. And if it's got a zip code, he'll sleep with it," he quips.

For John (39), making Torchwood has been a huge thrill.

"When Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner and I first sat down to talk about giving Captain Jack his own series, I was completely bowled over. It was a childhood dream to be a character in Doctor Who, so to have my own series was just unimaginable.

"I'm a grown man who gets to go to work every day and fight aliens, play with guns and kiss beautiful people – what more could I ask for?"

Born in Glasgow, John moved to Joliet, Illinois, with his family when he was eight years old. At high school he starred in an end-of-term musical and never looked back. On a visit to the UK in 1989, he chanced upon an open audition for a West End production of Anything Goes and, after wowing leading lady Elaine Paige, was plucked from obscurity to star in the Cole Porter classic. Acclaimed roles in a string of hit musicals followed, including Miss Saigon, Phantom Of The Opera, Sunset Boulevard and Beauty And The Beast.

The actor has also appeared in the BBC kids' show Live And Kicking, the 2004 film De-Lovely, celeb reality show Dancing On Ice and, most recently, as a judge on BBC One's How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, the search for a new West End star.

A life-long fan of Doctor Who, John admits that his home is stuffed with Captain Jack memorabilia, including his racy leather trousers, squareness gun and the bullets he aimed at the Daleks when we last saw him.

It's no surprise, then, that he was every bit as eager to find out more about Jack as the Time Agent's fans (or "Woodies" as John dubs them).

"When we first met Jack last year, he was a bit of a rogue, an intergalactic con man who had become that way because of something in his past. Two years of his life had been wiped from his memory and he had no idea why or what went on. Now he's now on a mission to find out more about himself," he explains.

And there's no better place to do that than Torchwood, which is located on a rift in time and space in modern-day Cardiff.

"Jack's not a time traveller, he's a Time Agent and he can only travel through time with the assistance of someone like The Doctor. Now, Cardiff has this rift in it and so it's one of the places the TARDIS is likely to return to, so Jack is just waiting. He never leaves, he never sleeps," says John.

It can be a lonely existence but Jack does find someone to confide in.

"Jack gets on with everyone in Torchwood but the only person who knows anything about him is Gwen. Gwen comes in and she brings something new to the team – she brings heart. And, for some reason, Jack starts to reveal things to her."

But even Gwen and Jack have their disagreements, he admits.

"Every now and then there are major in-house battles. There are always tensions bubbling away because they're facing life-or-death situations every day. Sometimes Jack gets very angry because the team don't understand why he's doing what he's doing. But Jack has seen Earth's future and he knows that the 21st century is when it all changes – and they've got to be ready."

Cardiff's space-time rift is the key, reveals John, because it acts as a gateway to Earth for a bone-chilling procession of aliens, including the Weevils, a race of wolf-like creatures that live in the city's sewers.

"The Weevils are one freaky bunch of aliens," he chuckles. "And every once in a while a Weevil goes rogue and attacks. That's when we have to step in because they can be mighty vicious."

Sewer-dwelling aliens aside, John loves working in Cardiff and has even bought a house overlooking the bay, which he shares with his partner, architect Scott Gill, and their two cocker spaniels, Penny and Lewis.

"When you see Cardiff on film, it looks like LA – it looks amazing," he says. "I've seen the first episode and Cardiff surprised even me. I think a lot of people are going to want to come here, not just because of Torchwood but because it's such a great place – it's buzzing every single day and it's beautiful."

John and Scott are even planning to cement their 13-year relationship with a civil partnership in the city later this year.

"All my family are coming over from the US to celebrate with us in December. It'll be a family thing – it won't be a Posh and Becks wedding," says John.

John is also hoping to find the time to give his family a guided tour of the state-of-the art BBC studio complex where Torchwood is filmed.

"It's a great place to work," says John. "Doctor Who is filmed there, too, and the TARDIS and the Hub are right next to each other – the only thing that separates us is a curtain.

"We all arrive at work and go off to our separate areas and then we have a big shared lunch place. So you might sit down with your salad next to a Weevil or share a pizza with a Dalek ... that's pretty normal for us," he laughs.

But not everyone shares the actor's enthusiasm for the BBC canteen. In fact, it was all a bit much for one little boy, the son of one of the Torchwood crew, who recently accompanied his dad to work.

John explains: "We were having lunch and suddenly this very recognisable alien walked by and the child just freaked out. He screamed and his dad grabbed his hand and said, 'You'll be fine – you're with me'. But the kid shouted: 'No! You can't do anything – I have to be with Jack!'

"He literally ran over, grabbed onto my leg and wouldn't let go. And the poor old alien was only going outside to have a cup of coffee and a fag!"

Titled "Torchwood Declassified", the series is a weekly behind the scenes guide to the making of individual Torchwood episodes, in the same fashion as "Doctor Who Confidential". Each episode should feature cast and crew interviews, as well as trips to the likes of The Mill. It's not yet none if viewers outside of the United Kingdom will have access to the series, but at the present moment in time, that looks unlikely. Even poor Kurly can't access the footage, because he lives in the US! No fair.

We're told that an update on the online series should be expected on "19.10.2006" - so watch this space!

Elsewhere on the website, there's a very cool tour of the Hub that only takes up a few minutes of your life, but fills us in on essential character information. There's a short interview with Russell T Davies (who loves his cast of actors very much!), as well character workstations that each have short character bios running on them. Sadly, because Torchwood is still a few weeks away from broadcast, there's a few areas on the site that still remain empty - but soon enough they'll be packed with juicy Torchwood gossip, so keep your eyes peeled!

The BBC site is a great home to the new Torchwood series, so don't forget to bookmark it in your favourites list (along with torchwood.tv I'm sure!). And remember to check back on the site for further updates in the coming weeks.

Now, we're only 10 days away. I'm counting down the seconds (literally!)...

UPDATE: It now looks like Torchwood Declassified will appear on BBC 3 in some shape or form. The Radio Times website indicates a Declassified broadcast...at three o'clock in the morning!

=O

OK, I got it wrong, but don't hold it against me. My source at the time was not an internal BBC spy, or anything so fancy; just an ordinary joe writing in an unofficial fan forum - so the information was bound to be slightly inaccurate!

Now, firmly back in the present day, and the Steven Moffat rumours refuse to go away.

Only now, it's clear that he's not writing Torchwood - but still, it's something a lot of Torchwood fans should be interested in...

Apparently, according to Doctor-Who-Online, Moffat's script for Doctor Who season three (episode ten, people are saying) will feature Captain Jack; exploring the character's missing two years of memories, and finally revealling exactly what happened at the Time Agency.

Back in August, Russell T Davies said that season three will feature a double banked episode, in the same vein as this year's "Love and Monsters". The episode will be light of either the Doctor or Martha Jones, but Russell claimed it would still be essential viewing for fans...

Around the same time, Russell also remarked that we won't learn about Captain Jack's missing two years in Torchwood the series. Instead, Russell claimed that when the day did come to tell the secret at last, Steven Moffat (Jack's creator) would be the one to tell it...

So, has the day come at last? Is Moffat ready to spill all?

Rumours are a funny old thing. Sometimes they're born from a sniff of the truth; othertimes they are completely fabricated - by individuals who wish that they were true. This particular rumour could be either - but on a personally level, I for one hope it's true. Wouldn't it be great if Captain Jack did indeed return in an episode written by the same guy who created him?

Anyways, don't blame me if - like the last Moffat rumour - this proves completely untrue.

Don't kill the messenger and all...
