As Superman rocketed across the skyline did people gasp: "Is it a bird, is it a plane... is it a queen?" They most certainly did not. When the Caped Crusader took on the outlaws of Gotham City was there a wicked whispering campaign about Batman and his boyfriend Robin? Did anyone ever wonder whether The Hulk was incredibly gay? No, no, no. But the times they are achanging. And while the thoroughly modern Captain Jack Harkness selflessly tries to make Planet Earth a safer place, his less-than-loyal followers giggle about what he gets up to in the bedroom. It's outrageous. Just because jaunty Jack has opted to stay in the closet, is that reason enough to laugh about him? A close friend of the suspiciously sexless Doctor Who, Harkness is the mysterious boss of Torchwood - a secret squad of alien-fighters who work on the strange principle that before you save the world you must first save Wales. "We know nothing about him except that he's gay," says the outfit's obligatory eccentric boffin, Owen Harper. "Period military is not the look of a straight man." Owen's right. In his fey airman's uniform, Jack definitely appears very gay. Thumbs up to actor John Barrowman for creating such a convincingly camp captain. Must be quite a stretch for him! Actually, John looked more macho when he was a judge on TV's gayest-ever poor quality programme, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? But back to the sci-fi action. And the Torchwood team have boldly gone... to Cardiff. After time travelling the universe, Jack and his acolytes have settled in a city you don't automatically associate with fighting the forces of intergalactic darkness. But, boy oh boyo, it's all happening in the Welsh capital. Randy receptionist Carys Fletcher is prowling the streets looking for men. A predatory sex addict of the worst kind, this girl specialises in the ultimate passionate experience. She'll shag a guy to death. Literally. Red-blooded males vowing to bed Carys if it's the last thing they do should beware. Because it will be the last thing they do. Just as he reaches that climactic moment, the poor bloke will come... and go. To an early grave. Her lucky lovers bow out howling with ecstasy. But Jack and his killjoy chums are determined to stop Carys spreading her unique brand of short-lived happiness. The poor girl has been body-snatched by a nymphomaniac space monster. And in the universal waste disposal unit also known as Cardiff this is an all too common problem. "There's a rift in space and time going right through the city," explains Jack. "All sorts of things get washed up here." Like the evil "weevils" who bite everyone's arteries. Or the gas-like creature currently having orgasmic fun in Carys. Down in the Torchwood HQ there's no time to waste. As Jack informs his new recruit, police girl Gwen Cooper: "The 21st Century is when everything changes - we've got to be ready." While we earthlings dawdle around with iPods, our cosmic cousins have gismos capable of bringing the dead back to life. You can probably already get them in Tokyo. But there's no need to breathe life into Torchwood. It was a compelling idea to make a Dr Who spin-off for adults only. And this X-certificate science fiction sizzler certainly delivers the grown-up goods - plenty of sex, girl-on-girl action, extreme violence and a filthy script full of four-letter words. No wonder its double episode curtain-raiser pulled in massive audiences on both BBC3 and BBC2, instantly establishing Torchwood as a success story. If you don't agree, Captain Jack will scratch your eyes out! |
