You wouldn't defend your life or that of a loved one if attacked?

I think your stance on guns is very defensive. It seems to me like you basically won't accept anything other than "i agree".

And as a European, guns just isn't a choice, unless you're hunting animals, in which case you carry a license and have received training in how to aim and fire a gun responsibly, meaning not at other human beings. Guns are scary and unnecessary, IMHO.

i think most europeans find it a sticky subject also because we are not used to guns around the house........

I agree with you Sanne don't get me wrong about guns but maby we would have a different opinion when we grew up around them.

Nothing levels the playing field for the weak better than having the means to defend themselves.

Yeah, to me that sounds like a pretty paranoid statement. In danish, we have this saying that, translated says "a thief thinks everyone steals" meaning, its sort of a vicious cycle. You need guns because other people have guns. And other people have guns because you have a gun, etc etc ..

I think, for us (like jessay and me) europeans, we feel no need for a gun, because the guns stay in forests, shooting ranges or on police officers .. only rarely does a gun come into the wrong hands (ike gangshootings) andc that's why they are unnecessary and scary, to us. A rapist doesn't have a gun, a burglar doesn't have a gun, etc. They might have a knife, but those are illegal too, and the authorities punish them when needed.

I think the difference is, places like the Netherlands and Denmark are smaller and more protected, maybe our level of socialism also has a say in this matter. And you could go on to say that you'd want a gun and reserve the right to own and use one, because the culture in your country is so vastly different from ours, so I don't think we'll ever agree Con

^ this refelects my feeling too, added to that the fear that is inbedded in culture.

You see it happening here too, fear that some papers and political parties are trying to spread, crime is down in our country and still people feel less and less safe and more prone to violence towards others.

The United States has more people per capita who own firearms, and I'm sure most would say they own them for "defensive purposes only". Yet, the United States also has one of the highest rates of gun violence/crimes of all the developed world.

I mean I really don't see how much more evidence one needs to realize that slack gun laws are bad news.

Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" is an excellent documentary relating to this. Very eye-opening.

I know this is a totally different subject but you're not allowed to have any sort of knife on your person? No matter if it's say a small pocket knife or something like that?

Just curious

The last I knew, the law was that you could have a blade up to 3 inches with you, but i'm sure if it changed to "no knives at all, ever" because i remember stories in the papers about carpenters being stopped on their way home from work because they had a blade in their pocket/car.

i just looked up the law: you can carry a knife with a 7 cm blade, it has to be opened with two hands (no spring-knives) and may not be locked. anything larger than that, you need a legitimate reason and/or permit.

Bowling for Columbine was a mockumentary because most of what Moore did was staged. It was hardly serious.
Will you be addressing the large amount of drug-related crime as a reason for many of the shootings?
