This subject, especially in movies, always makes me think. So there's a modern you and an 80s you. If you do time travel, there's always gonna be two of you. You can't make the other you that's in the 80s wisp away.

It's hard to explain, but if you knew, you would agree.

Couldn't only traveling back in time exist? Since you havent yet made your future?
You have already done whats in you past so you can go back n stuff. You haven't really done anything in your future, unless alternate dimensions were created just cause you went back in time. You would be able to see the consequence of your traveling back in time, wouldn't you?

Maybe someone invented a time machine and travelled back in time, but couldn't make it back to the future and was eaten by canibals.

Maybe time travel has been invented its just they're too far into the future to even think about traveling to this time.

Back to the Future is awesome (off topic)

I'd love to believe in it, but time travel seems pretty impossible. And it's waay too confusing.
If it were possible, it would be disastrous. Humans somehow manage to make a mess out of everything.

I always thought that an interesting movie looking into the concept of time travel was Donnie Darko.

perhaps through wormholes and all that, has anyone gone through a black hole? although i bet the later is impossible and would just tear everything apart, you know how thick those holes are... and until we havent tried we cant know. But timetravel itself i find dangerous, cool, but dangerous, and we may never know what we may unknowingly change.

Spirit Of '77:
it's not possible. that idea makes just about as much sense as the christian religion.

first of all, the way we keep track of time is a man made creation and is therefore only "in line" with the earth because we decided it is. so there's no way that it would suddenly be like, 2500, unless we randomly decieded it was.

next, even if you went through some sort of portal or something, you wouldnt be in a different time, just a different place. your biological clock would still be the same, and therefore you would still be in the same time. everyone around you may think they're in the year 2042, but to you it's still 2005.

you can't go back and forth between times at the same place because to go into the future you'd have to skip over all sorts of things that are suppossed to happen. so therefore, even if you did get there, it wouldnt be what it would actually be if you were to actually live through all that time and get there.

and to go to the past you'd have to erase all the time that has happened after that. and you can't erase things that have happened to the earth, you can't resurrect the long past dead, and you couldn't re-live the exact same thing the exact same way.

that probably makes absolutley no sense. but i know what i'm getting at...

you just made me philosophize... and what you say actually makes great sense...like humans age cause we breathe in oxygen, THAT makes us age...not the time... although we need time to meazure things...damn...this requires thinking...

Love that movie :]
That movie made me think that the whole universe was in a loop though :/ And that other 'dimensions' exist.
[off-topic] Uh, i heard someone ask that if Donnie dies at the end, does that mean Jim Cunningham[sp] never gets caught for the child porn thing? I mean he [was] crying at the end but it doesn't mean he stopped having a porn dungeon. o.o
I think there should be a thread on directly discussing that movie and what its about. e_e

I agree with that idea. That there should be a Donnie Darko thread.

I absolutely love that movie. It makes me think. It's just..amazing.

Anyways, to the topic on this thread, yes. I believe time travel is possible. It's already happening. You hop on a plane in America and fly to Australia. BOOM. You've just travelled forward in time a whole day.

As awesome as time travel movies are, they always have major plotholes.
Donnie Darko, for example... Frank wakes Donnie up and by doing so, pulls him into an alternate universe. Just to tell him that the world will end, and the only way to stop that is to get himself BACK to the original universe and die. The only reason he's IN that A.U. was because of Frank. The whole thing is entirely unnecessary.
Back To The Future... well, when Marty goes back to the future, and watches himself running from the terrorists and going back in time? If you think about it, there's going to be infinite "clones" of himself. Watching himself watch himself go back in time.. etc. D:

Sheepo@_@:

Maybe time travel has been invented its just they're too far into the future to even think about traveling to this time.

But if time is infinite, there has to be someone, somewhere, at some point, thinking, "I should go to the year 1!" or something...

But, see, Frank is from the future. Frank has already been shot by Donnie. Frank knows that if it happens again, the world will end, so he has to go back in time so that Donnie won't....wait....I've just confused myself.

But yes...True what you said then. It's still a great plot though. Makes you think.

But Donnie did shoot Frank again.
From my experience, time travel movies can only be explained if you encorporate the theory of fate. It's supposed to happen that way, and that's that. o_o;;
Frank going back and waking Donnie up is because Frank was shot, BEFORE he went back in time to wake Donnie up (or after, rather...), which means Donnie HAD to go into an alternate universe. Why? Because that was destiny. Shocked

Definitely. They're always difficult to entirely grasp the concept of. That's what makes them awesome. <3

Shit. All that is very confusing. 0_0
What if we do jump through time? As often as two times a week, say you go to sleep for what seems like 2 minutes and wake up actually 5 hours later. How does feeling come up? and also does anyone how Deja Vu[sp] is explained? Thats why I believe the theory of alternate universes, sorta. :/ What if there is clones of you spread throughout these other dimensions and Deja Vu is just you subconsiously knowing. Like another dimension except a minute ahead of your dimension.
A minute before my mother hit a car infront of her I said we might get into an accident. I also told her to slow down on a curve because a 18-wheeler was gonna becoming around. And it did. And I hadn't even seen it. I just felt it and knew. Shocked

Yeah, I'm sure we've all experienced those before. When we know something we have no reason to know.. it's weird.
I remember reading the wiki on deja vus a while back. There's no definite explanation. There's a ton of scientific explanations, like nerve impulses or electric discharges in the brain, some belief-related ones (reincarnation), and some about how Deja Vu's are faint memories of dreams you had a long time ago... I dunno. It doesn't seem like something that can be proven, really.
But I think alternate universes could very well be another explanation, if one believes in it.
I personally don't know what to believe. I don't know enough about time travel or A.U.s to say.

True, true. :/
I wish people had a better insight to all of it. It'd be really intersting to know...or just to study really. Like sometimes I'll have dreams about a scene in a movie. I'll wake up turn on the tv and that same movie and scene will just be starting and it scares the shit out of me Laughing These topics really do interest me because it happens to me alot I guess.
...
I really dont think Deja Vu is dreams you had long ago :/ I dont think it'd make sense if it was. We'd all be sorta "dream physic[sp]" then wouldn't we?

I think alternate universes could be formed. I mean just with the simple "what-if road and what-is road" I like to put it that way. Like I choose not to take drugs[what-is road] and A.U would be created being the [what-if road] What if i had taken drugs what would have become of me? Would I have been more successful or less? But then really what would be of those A.U's being created if no one really has no need for as they cant watch themselves? What purpose would they serve really? o_o im starting to get into this......XD imanerd. Dance
