you forgot saving the world from evil robots.....

you make it sound like ALL the teen movies with individualistic kids are about kids who are either with child or under house arrest. States Evidence has individualistic characters and neither event happens in that movie. It's also an indie film, but that's beside the point.

No, I just wish that Hollywood would show different sides to teens more often, rather than the one side that's "good kids" and the other side that's "bad kids". I don't think all movies are like that, not at all. Many movies show some really cool teens, for sure.

Let's look at popular music.
You know, like the rap and pop, top 40 [or 20?]

What does at least half of it sing about?

- Having money, spending it, and keeping it to yourself
- Drinking
- Being violent and disrespectful to people

Many people listen to this, and like it. They take the music's word.
At least in my state, many people are influenced by this and act mean, disrepectful, spoiled, and very ignorant.

same here. and the songs also talk about annoymous sex, which i do not agree with at all.

but, yeah. i agree you
I'd just like to say that top 40 songs where you're from aren't exactly universal.

I found that to be true five to ten years ago, but I think it's changing much for the better in terms of world music. I think the world music scene is a lot cleaner now and definately more diverse. Occasionally a few more 'vulgar' songs will get through, but not as often as before. There's been a recent revival in culturalism, especially where I'm from, so the popular music bands here respect tradition more a promote local culture. I find this true for a lot of Asian and European countries nowadays. Also, I hear in Mexico, there is less influence from the mainstream American popular music too.

yeah, I was focusing on most of america, I didn't really think about the rest of the world.

I see.

But, I was reading Scar Tissue [autobiography of the singer for RHCP], and what is taking place right now is that the year is 94 or 95, and they're making a music video for the song Aeroplane which has girls in full sequin body suits, and they're showing their assses [not bare] and just showing off their body
But it almost didn't get on because they thought it was too extreme
Even though the visual didn't have much meaning, the song does.

Now, theres 'Superman dat hoooo!'
I mean, people like this stuff. At least in my area. They love american pop and hip hop music.

I'm not sure about other areas, but that's how it is here.
And mostly everywhere else that is full of rich stuck up people

I think it can be good and bad.
I mean there is good role models out there like say Mr T.
And there is also bad ones like Paris Hilton.
No explanation needed.

Most people would be 50/50 on this one.

Well, if I didn't do film studies and therefore be taught how films are put together and whatnot.. I probably wouldn't have looked any further into any Michael Moore films and would've accepted what he says in them.

Honestly, I think the media corrupts everyone, not just children. We all just sit in front of the tv, or read a newspaper, and believe whatever we are hearing or reading. I know not EVERYONE does this, but the majority of the population do.

I beleive that media only makes us young ones so what celeb's do with there hair, or they go on "diets" so they can be as skinny and pefect looking. I admit when i lok at models in magazines i think, why can't i had there nose or there body or there legs? But im not like other girls in my school so it dosen't affect me that much.

But when it comes to violent movies when people say childeren who watch violent movies will have more of a chance of being violent. But why is it in the period of time they took violent movies away is the period of time when most killings and violence happened???Because people like to see it they find it entertaining to watch, so therefore they do it themselfs.
Most people who do commit crimes come from poor families that don't really have an education and don't have parent's that look after them.

Im going of the point of this thread a tad i believe but oh well lol. Some people do copy movies but usually it's the most UNSENSIBLE people, who can't tell the difference between reality and movies.

Streaching the truth to make things more intresting.
But it's to the point to where it broke.
And I honestly thinks it's all cause of money reasons.
They make things look 'beautiful' and then everyone likes it and goes out and buys it just cuase their 'hero' wears it. And then they watch some more to see what else they can wear to look hot.

And then they make the outcasts look like they're so mirsable and ugly and nobody likes or wants them. So they don't wanna be like that.

The way I look at it is like this. Yes, the media does corrupt to an extent. Sure, things made be advertised or around in popular culture that are wrong, but if you have the mentality to know it's wrong and know that you won't believe/listen or whatever to what it's saying, then it won't have an effect on you.

I don't know if corrupt is the right word, but indoctrinate, yes. Especially since it seems that alot of young peolple (mostly college kids) get their news from The Colbert Report and The Daily Show. Seriously watch the REAL news. And don't just watch one station. Alternate between them and make your decision from there. If you get your info from one station is likely to be bias. And don't believe everything you hear or see.

The media is highly influential in many different ways, and it's questionable whether the influence is positive or negative. If one is raised with morals, standards, and knowledge, then they can view the media as entertainment, however if one is raised by the media, all actions, thoughts, and morals are learned from any source provided, and they may not have the sense to see whether something is wrong or right. It depends on how media is used, as entertainment or as "a parent to society"??

That is what the media were made for; influencing people.
Of course, we all know that there are programmes that influence people in a good way, and programmes that influence people in a bad way.
It all depends on how the person's raised, they way they treat the media and the way media is used, as a fellow GSBian stated above. :]

The word 'media' in itself gives part of the answer - the media 'mediate'. Provide a middle-man between actual events and the consumer. An interpretation of what has happened.

You can choose to be active, and challenge what you see/hear/read - just because a book tells you to shoot someone doesn't mean you'll do it - or be passive and just soak it all up.

Similarly, the Times is going to report something entirely different to the way that the Telegraph reports it. Again, you can choose to believe it or to challenge it. As a young person or not.

As people have said, it's up to the person that consumes the media whether or not it 'corrupts' them. If you don't believe everything in the media or take it to be right and acceptable all the time then I don't think it's an issue.
