Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood
Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down"

 | February 12th, 2008 at 07:04pm I have depression.
It sucks. Especially in my town. They are all happy go lucky 'we are perfect'. I don't fit in.
In my school, we had this seminar thing with the school psychiatrist and he was talking about depression in teens. He said that it was something we can get over and that are 2 types of depression: you are over it in a day or you need to be locked up.
I felt extremely crappy after that. It IS serious. |

 | February 12th, 2008 at 08:26pm Ur right, depression is serious, but, people don't neccesarily have to be "locked up" when they have depression. That's only in extreme cases like when u don't do anything that u would when u weren't depressed and when ur a threat to urself and others.
I know second hand someone close to me went through a involuntary lockdown and it was the most scariest thing i've ever been through. |

 | February 12th, 2008 at 10:26pm Guys, it isn't the end of the world if you have depression. Only a mere 3% of people on earth are 100% mentally stable. Meaning the other 97% of the world deal with depression, anxiety, and many many other things. You are not alone.
BTW, I thought I'd mention that many of those symptoms are also signs of anxiety (which I have). So just because you have a few of these symptoms doesn't nessessarily mean you're depressed... it could be lots of things. |

 | February 16th, 2008 at 05:45pm ^^Nice, I agree, it could be a lot of things other than depression. When i was diagnosed w/ Dpression, i was also diagnosed w/ Social anxiety too.. if that helps. |

| February 17th, 2008 at 08:31pm Even if you have some of the symptoms, it might not mean you're depressed. I mean, I have at least half the symptoms of bipolar depression or hypomania, but I'm neither of them. |

 | February 22nd, 2008 at 10:58am That's the problem when people find out the symptoms of things and find portions that relate to them. Happens a lot in Psychology courses.
After all, those symptoms described also can easily fit the bill for the negative symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder and when you break up the symptoms (as rarely does a patient exhibit all of these symptoms) then they could easily be symptoms diverse as diabetes or just being hormonal.
And depression has lots of types and severities. And even then, sometimes a psychologist isn't required - just some activity to pass the time if the patient is recently retired or such other similiar transitional changes. |

 | October 23rd, 2009 at 02:47pm I think that depression is serious.
I also think that it's stupid how many kids these days,
Of my age give-take some years,
All think that over the littlest things they are depressed.
It's because nowa'days most everything is handed to some kids may age,
And so when something simple goes wrong with what they want,
"They're depressed."
It's rather rediculous. |
