Somedays I didn't think we'd ever find a paradise of our own as I sat stiffly by his hospital bed, watching him fight for breath.
He looked so small, surrounded by monsters that beeped and whirred and swallowed what little life he had left.
When the bumbling nurses had vanished, and all had grown quiet, I wrapped him in blankets and stole him away from them.
And we drove for days, with him hunched over in the passenger seat, coughing, face pale, eyes blazing.
Neither of us knew where we were going, but all we knew was that the car could not stop, that we must keep driving.
As far as I can tell, sometime in the fragile moments between dark and dawn, the world we knew vanished entirely
Or perhaps it was the pair of us who vanished entirely, leaving our world behind in our desperation.
But suddenly his cough was gone, and the color was back in his cheeks, and he sat up straight, laughed, kissed my cheeks.
The sky was alight with rainbows, and the sunshine glittered on the water of the lake, and birds were singing symphonies.
We tumbled out of the car to lay side by side on the grass, to hold hands and kiss each other's lips and marvel at our surroundings.
So as far as I can tell, sometime in those peaceful seconds between dark and dawn, we left our world behind us.
And we've never looked back. |
