I noticed that there is alot of people on this site, and else where that seem to badmouth rap music alot. Well first off just to put it out there, I myself rap. Now to get started.

1.) I noticed that alot of you seem to use the same thing.
Quote
Rap= Retards Attempting Poetry
. Here are some random definitions of poetry

A piece of literature written in meter; verse.

Prose that resembles a poem in some respect, as in form or sound.

The essence or characteristic quality of a poem.

Okay, All rap music involves several verses, or 'meters' Rap music has the rhyming form of some poetry. It also has the characteristics as some. Using rhyme scheme, emotion, similies, metphors, a large vocabulary. So you can't really say that rap music is not poetry. It is in its own aspects.[ In other words, it is its own form of poetry]

2.) Alot of peopl say that all rap is about fucking bitches, and hoes, and doing drugs, the rappers chains, their money, their cars, and saying ' nigga'. It is not. First off the word 'nigga' is a cultural word. Alot of african americans use that word as an insult to another, as a compliment such as saying that person is their man. It is NOT the same thing as saying 'Nig*er', and it is not racist like that word is. Now that that is out of the way, Not all rap is about the cars, money, girls, chains. Alot of it is about life stories, and pain they have gone through. Story telling. Here are some quotes to prove to you.

Quote
Tupac- Baby Don't cry:
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {Keep ya head up}

Now here's a story bout a woman with dreams
So picture perfect at thirteen, an ebony queen
Beneath the surface it was more than just a crooked smile
Nobody knew about her secret so it took a while
I could see a tear fall slow down her black cheek
Sheddin quiet tears in the back seat; so when she asked me,
"What would you do if it was you?"
Couldn't answer such a horrible pain to live through
I tried to trade places in the tragedy
I couldn't picture three crazed niggaz grabbin me
For just a moment I was trapped in the pain, Lord come and take me
Four niggaz violated, they chased and they raped me
Even though it wasn't me, I could feel the grief
Thinkin with your brains blown that would make the pain go
No! You got to find a way to survive
cause they win when your soul dies

^ there for example, Tupac is talking about how this girl was raped, and he trying to understand her pain. Poetry, expression on his, and other peoples stories.

Quote
Eminem-Mockingbird:
Hailie I know you miss your mom and I know you miss your dad
Well I'm gone but I'm trying to give you the life that I never had
I can see you're sad, even when you smile, even when you laugh
I can see it in your eyes, deep inside you want to cry
Cause you're scared, I ain't there?
Daddy's with you in your prayers
No more crying, wipe them tears
Daddy's here, no more nightmares
We gon' pull together through it, we gon' do it
Laney uncles crazy, ain't he?
Yeah but he loves you girl and you better know it
We're all we got in this world
When it spins, when it swirls
When it whirls, when it twirls
Two little beautiful girls
Lookin' puzzled, in a daze
I know it's confusing you
Daddy's always on the move, mamma's always on the news
I try to keep you sheltered from it but somehow it seems
The harder that I try to do that, the more it backfires on me
All the things growing up his daddy that he had to see
Daddy don't want you to see but you see just as much as he did
We did not plan it to be this way, your mother and me
But things have gotten so bad between us
I don't see us ever being together ever again
Like we used to be when we was teenagers
But then of course everything always happens for a reason
I guess it was never meant to be
But it's just something we have no control over and that's what destiny is
But no more worries, rest your head and go to sleep
Maybe one day we'll wake up and this will all just be a dream

There he is talking about his daughter, putting htings into perspective and explaining it to her, and his niece.

Quote
Syco-End Of The Road:
Life seems to be a shadow,
see it leave me in the battle
See me screamin for an adle[ aderol]
Come and free me from this asshole
That I've grown to be,
I know I'm not right, the only thing wrong is me
Reflection in the mirror, don't take that tone with me
I said its getting clearer, You comin home with me
But then I read the lyrics, Home is where the lonely speak
But only he could see what I hope to be
Rose to feet, fell straight both my knees
Flowers seem so pretty tell them roses bleed
Black and white picture of my eyes closed asleep
TV says, this is what its supposed to be
LIFE, a four letter word misconstrued
A viscious truthm but this is what you fit to do
Saying 'can't be me' till it sticks to you
then you finnally realize that this is you

I'm at the end of the round, and I'm sittin at clear, and all I see is the tears so I'm leavin it here, and i dont wanna let go{ and i dont ever wanna let go}

^myself, see if you can figure it out. =]

3.) Just because you many not like rap music, does not mean you have to talk foul about it, or people who like it. Try to respect what other people like. I mean the rap artists themselves listen to a wide variety of music. Some rock, punk, metal. Tech N9ne for example. Highly lyrical Rapper listens to slipknot. Just because he raps doesnt mean a thing about his preferences. its just what gets him paid, what makes his money.

4.) The stereotype that whites can't rap. Color has NO influence on wether you can rap or not. Eminem raps, and has to be one of the best emcees to ever bless the microphone. Atmosphere is also another great white lyricist. Lil wyte, is okay. Just because the color of your skin doesnt mean a thing. That like saying because somebody is asian, or african american they cant do rock. which is wrong. Look at jimmy hendrix. He has to be One if not the best guitarist ever.

yeah. rant over for now. Opinions, replies....disscussion. =]

The only rap I have a problem with is the ones that talk about "fucking hoes" and drinking and their cars.

I like a lot of rap, actually, because as a poet I admire their art, and as a musician I like their... beats? But if an rapper's single is just disgusting and mysogynistic, then I'm less likely to want to hear anything else from him.

I wish this was clearer, but my laptop's dyingggggggg.

I think any musical genre has its positive aspects and its negative aspects. I mean, rock songs can be just a deragatory towards women as rap can not to mention the frequent drug referals. Alot of people find certain country artists putting out this stereotype that all people who listen to country are stupid hicks. However, if you look deeper into those stereotypes you'll see they aren't true.

Rap seems to get a particularly bad rep because out of all the genres, I feel that the commercially successful artists are the ones that are all about sexist views and racist slurs. Obviously, that isn't totally true and examples were provided from popular artists that aren't obscene. Kids just seem to eat contreversial songs up so much more than those with meaning, and those songs end up being the ones a whole genre of music is judged for. It isnt fair really.

Ol' Blue Eyes.:
The only rap I have a problem with is the ones that talk about "fucking hoes" and drinking and their cars..
That's mainly Hip/Hop and Reggeaton (not Reggae) that does that.

I personally enjoy rap music. Bands like Cypress Hill, Violadores del Verso...
I also enjoy Ragga music which is a new genre with a mix of rap and reggae and it's very cool.

I really hate Hip/Hop and Reggaeton, like in Hip/Hop Jay-Z, Usher... And Reggaeton, Daddy Yankee.

Most of you might not know what Reggaeton is but it's like Hip/Hop but with a more bouncy rythm and as my friend Ol' Blue Eyes said. It talks mainly of women being whores and stuff.

You can't throw rap into the same box. There is a huuuuge difference between 50 Cent and Eminem, though Eminem made 50 a star. 50 Cents songs are about huge tits, sex and expensive cars. In his videos you see money, cars, whores and stuff, and in videos by Eminem you don't see that, only when he's joking.
I like rap, I used to be a huge rap fan, and I don't like when people think it sucks only because of some exceptions that are bad.

Eminem sings about a lot of things, sometimes about chicks too, you don't need to be really smart to see that his lyrics are much better than 50 Cents, who mostly sings about money, guns etc. [I own Get Rich or Die Tryin', so I've heard it, and most of Eminems CDs]

when you get her in the bed
you need.. g's like me to get her to give you head

I'll let you lick the lollypop

Isn't it ironic how erotic it is to watch em in thongs
Had me thinking 'bout that ass after I'm gone
I touch the right spot at the right time
Lights on or lights off, she like it from behind

Rap to me is exactly like punk. It's all these mainstream artists setting the expectations for those who are still taking it as a serious art form. And it pisses people off because it's not supposed to be like that.

Rap and hip hop get the short end of the stick here simply because this is a website for a rock band meaning more rock fans, but it's uncanny the similarities between what you get in the underground rap and punk scenes. Both were politically influenced, both sprung up from the same kinds of music, both were accelerated into mainstream stardom in the same fashion, and both are subject to a share of 'posers' to this day.

It's the credibility of the artist which is usually called into question nowadays. That's why you see any underground rap scene finds artists such as 50 Cent and Eminem very distasteful, likewise with punk music.

one of the issues with rap is how it talks about woman, alot of rappers have lyrics that suggest that woman are nothing more then sex objects, witch is clearly untrue. anouther thing that disturbes people is the profanity, but personily I don't really get offended by that much.

Personally, I dislike rap.
I understand that not all rap is about sex, crunk, sex, cars, and being rich.
But the rap music that becomes famous is mostly about those things.

Even if there are touching lyrics, I'm just not fond of the sound of rap.
Anybody can talk and rhyme.
It's much more tasty to have good singing voices.

I like some rap. I like the sounds of it.
I think it's a really interesting genre of music.
You know, the "poetic" sense of it.

I listen to it rarely. Few artists. I like Eminem.
I especially like,
"Sing For The Moment"
"Toy Soldiers"
"Mosh"
"Mockingbird"

Those are some songs I absolutely love.
I can't tell you how many times I've listened to Sing For The Moment.

Exactly. Cassie Its primal form has lost on the seriousness because the mainstream artists aren't into the topics the first hip-hoppers were. Just like todays and 1977s punk.
