Instead of being a lazy ass, perhaps Panic should actually coppy and paste his view here instead of posting it as a link no one will read.

You would do well to credit yourself in future...

Or would it kill you to re-post it here?

In any case, I myself use a file-sharing program when I need to...But I much prefer owning the CD's myself. Only when a shortage of cash comes into play do I resort to using the program.

Music Piracy has been going on for years, when my parents were young they taped songs off the radio and now a days we download music and burn CDs and in ten or twenty years there'll probably be a more advanced way of doing it.
Its illeagle but loads of people do it and why not? When you buy CDs you're giving money to large profit making companies and artists with tonns of money, why shouldn't someone who is a bit straped for cash burn a few CDs

Maybe a spell check would be in order first, as the grammar of the first paragraph ALONE makes my head ache.

I despise music piracy and everyone who takes part in it. It's strealing, stealing is fieble and pathetic.
Artists are at the very end of the food chain in this business, and it hits them the most. Bullshit like "they have enough money" and "it's art, they should give it to us for free" is a very lame excuse - people should get paid for their work Would you like it if one week you got paid for your work, and the next week your boss would say "Nah, you already got enough money, we don't have to pay you this time!"?

I think a little bit of music piracy is ok but I hate it when people resort to downloading nearly everything. I, myself, like to download a few songs to see what a band sounds like... and then I save up and hit the stores when there's a sale on. I think it's wrong to download albums, movies and games though.

What 'Faith' said is true in a way but then again the record labels often don't give bands as much as they deserve.. go to the shows! They get more of the money.. I often download an album if I can't get it here or if the P&P to here is expensive. But I usually get round to buying it.. Same for albums which I can't afford when they come out. And sometimes you just want to check out an album before you buy it.. okay that was a little rushed and such but you catch my drift?

Yeah, well, the thing is - when you buy the CD you don't only pay the artist - you pay the producers, the mixing people, the people who do the cover art, people who work for the record company...a shitload of people, in a word. You're saying yourself that the company is not giving the artists what the deserve - by stealing their music, you're only making it worse.
Not everyone has a chance to go to the shows, or buy merchandize, so CDs and legal downloads are the main sourse of income for artists.
Where I am now, I can't buy CDs at all - they just don't get here. There are no record stores and even if I order anything in, it will get stolen in the mail. So, I just don't buy CDs. No matter how much I want that album, I'd rather refrain from stealing.

I buy the cd's, my brother works in the music industry behind the scenes, the people who are most affected by pirating are not the artists.

musicians make more money from touring and merchandise anyway

I don't agree with any of you.....Faith makes the best argument though

you're crazy if you think that it's harmless....you're crazy if you think it's destroying the music industry and you're crazy if you think the government can do anything, has done anything, or can publisize it any more

again, I do not condone the use of comediac quotes but, "the music industry had arrested 997 individuals who use file sharing programes and they released this statement, '997 down, 27 billion more to go'." - David Spade

it's true, it hurts some people...not the musicians; they sign a contract and make the same amount of money

but the people who drive the trucks to the stores carrying CDs....their jobs are jeopordized because of this; the Bestu Buys carrying the music....they're jeopordized

this is one of the main reasons artist are now encouraged to use the Dual Disc feature with a DVD on one side.....something most people can't burn

the reason that Metallica was one of the few bands to take a stand because they really only cared about their art getting out before it was intended (they found out about Napster because some one got part of their track "I Dissapear" before it was even finished) to come out and because the little people in the music buisiness are losing money.....but the artists really arn't affected as much as the media says

but the people who aren't famous millionaires are losing money and I do care about that

I use file sharing very rarely...only to get a hold of stuff that's never to be released or to get a taste of a band...but I also use MySpace Bands for that and I usually buy the CD

so don't use file sharing for a ton of stuff.....but don't say it's only bad because if not for file sharing I would only have 1/20 of my album collection...most bands I like I find over the internet because good bands aren't on radio or MTV (becaus M stands for music Rolling Eyes )

You pretty much said it all.
I just wanted to add that it really irritates me when people buy piraty copies of CDs - they pay the pirates. Not only do those people get away with paricy. They actually get PAID for stealing someone else's work! I can understand when people say "I download a couple of songs to get a taste of the band", but there is really no excuse for buying a pirate CD instead of a real one.

And it really sucks when people steal songs before they are even finished. Like what happened with SOAD. Really, like selling a painting before the artist has finished it. Rolling Eyes

Mm. Well I use Napster to hear new artists.
But in the end if I like I do always tend to buy.
I can't put the music on my iPod {copyright} etc anyway.
The only thing I steal use to steal is porn. =D

(Copied from the link)

This is what I ask you all, is it really that bad? Are Filesharers to blame for high prices and artists with small labels not making money? Are they terrorists those who sell CD's on the street? Is the propaganda the government sends out in waves really true. I present to you one word - No.

I admit to being a filesharer myself and not paying for a lot of my music, however, what I do own are CD's of lesser known bands. Would I have bought their CD if not for file sharing? Tis unlikely as the Small record label albums are hard to find expensive, and if not for the net I would not even of heard of them. I don't want to waste 15 pounds of my cash on a small label I mayor may not like, why should I waste my y money when I can try the album beforehand at home for nothing? Would YOU buy a record you'd never heard no, or even heard of their music?

No, the future of small labels taking off is Filesharing services such as Bittorrent. They allow music listeners to try the album beforehand, and if they dislike it? Well they just don't buy it.

Oh I'd also like to add, it is not filesharers that push up the prices, it is retailers. How much mark up do you think is made? Around 200% most likely, and this is not even taking into account the amount the Record labels take from the money the artists earn. If you look to the above about digital distribution, is it possible for artists to launch their music without the need for a label, The labels presume that without them they would have no publicity non? With File sharing there would be no need for that, artists could distribute CD's from a home sit to those that like their music, and increase their income.

Moving onto another topic matter about the government propaganda is the lies , or twisted truths they send out. Many adverts claim that "Pirate" Films are of a very poor quality, and not worth paying for. Perhaps they are not as good as the cinema version, but you get what you pay for yes? I choose the get the lesser quality version off the net for films which are ot top of my must see list. And this may even encourage me to buy the DVD when it is released. The adverts used are completely untrue, and very little evidence is shown to back it up. There merely take people who have been caught with poor copies and used that to fuel their campaign.

Another lie sent out is that they claim that money from music piracy fuels drug crime, terrorism, and other matter such as them. I would ask for proof no? And as of yet they have provided no evidence to sway me otherwise. Most of the people I know who sell CD's and DVD's are honest guys who want to make a little bit of money on the side. Not gun wielding manics as I'm sure you'll agree.

i don't think you can really blame kids these days for doing it. i don't file share myself but i know plenty of people my age that don't get much money, and most cds are so damn expensive, espetially the big fat company ones. in my opinion its no wonder kids download their music. i'm not saying its right by they way, but i'm not saying its wrong either.
